Bennato's "Great South", January 24, 2009

Eugenio Bennato is one of the leading figures in the southern Italian neoroots revival, as much a cultural entrepreneur as a musician. His Taranta Power is an ambitious project that makes recordings, promotes concerts, offers instruction in music and dance, and otherwise promotes and preserves traditional southern Italian and other Mediterranean musics. Grande Sud (Great South)is a good introduction for those who haven't caught any of his earlier work. He reprises a couple of songs from his superb 2001 album "Che il mediterraneo sia" (Let the Mediterranean Be)with somewhat different arrangements. The band and backup singers (the latter include Africans)are excellent, the driving taranta pizzica rhythms impossible to resist.
