Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-K-Rejoice! Buckley's classic tales are back in print with an updated look that is sure to send grandparents of the '90s scurrying to their local bookstores or libraries. Gone is the white bread look of Paul Galdone's beloved but dated illustrations. Instead, Ormerod's full-color paintings teem with the warmth of a loving intergenerational family and fairly burst from the pages. Her fine pencil-and-watercolor illustrations capture the calm and giving nature of these grandparents and reveal what is special about their relationships with their grandchildren. Ormerod is equally successful when picturing the busy details of life in these African-American families. Siblings gladly read to a young sister and hurrying parents rush off with a hug and a smile (no parental frowns in this family). Buckley's original stories stand the test of time beautifully and remain basically intact. In Grandfather and I, a young boy relishes the time that he and his grandfather share exploring the world around them while others hurry to their appointed tasks, and a preschool girl enjoys the warm comfort of her grandmother's lap and rocking chair in Grandmother and I. Two rejuvenated stories that are tailor-made for cozy reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for children!, June 15, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Grandfather and I (Hardcover)
I grew up reading this book to my grandfather and it is an easy book for children to read. It gives a wonderful depiction of the special relationship grandfathers have with their grandchildren. Even though I am grown up now, I still read this book to my grandfather when I visit him. I hope you enjoy the book as much as I did.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book for young readers or in the classrom, for a child to read with a grandparent, October 14, 2011
This review is from: Grandfather and I (Paperback)
A bonding book between grandfather and child. Cozy is a good word for it. Everyone is in a hurry, except grandfather who takes time for the boy and girl. An African American theme, a nice book with good mix of portait illustrations and scenery. One reader makes a good point that the book teaches about a granfather's love at the expense of parents and siblings, but it that lesson is not so strong, and the parents and siblings don't actually appear in the book in any way to detract from their role. It is more about highlighting the special love an older grandfather has for the children. For young readers and in the classroom.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Bit Disappointed, March 23, 2009
This review is from: Grandfather and I (Paperback)
I was a bit disappointed with Grandfather and I. I had expected a book that would showcase the love of a Grandpa for his grandchild. While Grandfather and I does that, it does so at the expense of love from parents, siblings, and friends. Grandparents are special relatives. I thank the Lord for His mercy in giving my children wonderful grandparents to love them, but a grandparent's love is not better than a parent's love -- only different.
