I wasn't really sure what to make of this release since it's definitely not your typical dance mix. But I knew that Ame, Henrik Schwarz, and Dixon all have impeccable taste as djs, so the result was worth checking out. (Not to mention that the price is right for double disc set.) Indeed, if you're looking for something to work out to, you probably aren't going to enjoy this set. But if you're interested in a modern music looked at through the refraction of history, you're in for a real treat. Somehow the flow on the mix CD is remarkable despite spanning 4 decades worth of music. Anyway, if you've ever heard any of these producers/djs before, I highly recommend you take a chance on this set!

5.0 out of 5 stars If only all minimal was as good as this!, August 2, 2009
This review is from: Grandfather Paradox (Audio CD)
Minimal house has been the enemy of music lovers the last few years, mainly due to an army of soulless djs who have taken the worst of the genre and inflicted it on clubs and bars around the world without mercy. The big dj success stories of the genre have been people like Ricardo Villalobos, Ame & Dixon - the djs that know that house music, even minimal has black roots and who I'm guessing actually own a Stevie Wonder record.

When BBE commissioned this project they approached two of the afore mentioned - Ame and Dixon and for good measure threw them together with another German house hero Henrik Schwarz. Assessing the project the boys initial instinct was to compile some of their early 90's techno inspirations, the likes of Robert Hood and Plastikman but on reflection decided to widen the remit to include some of the great influential minimal music from way before techno as well.

Luckily minimal by it's very nature is perfect for layering on other tracks and the boys have combined music from electronic pioneers with the minimal techno godfathers, hence the album title which refers to a scientific theory about time travel first described by sci-fi writer Rene Barjavel which relates perfectly with the boys traveling back in musical time and manipulating the old music with modern beats and knowledge.

Tracks from Krautrock heroes Can rub shoulders with the modern French electronic beats of I:Cube, British funk heroes Cymande say hello to Detroit techno hero Robert Hood, minimal pioneer Steve Reich has a beer with modern post rock trio To Rococo Rot and the avant-garde genius Arthur Russell shares a sofa with a Richie Hawtin remix of French house boys La Funk Mob.

I can honestly say that I have enjoyed and played this album more than any other in 2009. Being a committed soul boy this was just what I needed to put music to vaguely familiar names, send me into previously uncharted musical territory and open my ears to the world of minimal music. I'll never be musically the same again and that's the truth!!
