Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4-Although the title and cover photo would lead one to believe that this is exclusively a story about a child's grandfather and his occupation as a healer in Nigeria, the first half of the book explains what everyone else in the family does. Nonetheless, this is an interesting glimpse at occupations from iron work to the practice of law in a contemporary West African village. The section about the grandfather's work as a traditional healer is fascinating, leaving readers hungry for more information on the use of various herbs and roots in healing. The text is accessible and the full-color photographs are clear and informative. A good addition to collections seeking material about other cultures and a possible discussion starter on traditional vs. modern medicine.

From Booklist

Ages 5^-7. A young Nigerian boy describes the jobs of his many relatives, comparing each to the work of his grandfather, a traditional healer who uses his vast knowledge of plants to help heal the sick. Onyefulu's color pictures depict each family member at work as the boy describes the relative's chosen profession. Children meet the family members: Uncle Law (so called because he is a lawyer); Auntie Ngo, who studied for seven years to become a doctor; and the artists, an uncle who is a carver and a favorite aunt who makes pots. The boy's simple first-person narration will appeal to the target audience, and the photographs, which give the fictional story the look of fact, provide youngsters with a glimpse of life in a close-knit African village where centuries-old traditions intermingle with familiar modern culture. 4.0 out of 5 stars Nigerians! An Industrious People, April 4, 2001

This review is from: Grandfather'S Work (Library Binding)
When I selected this book I was looking for a book I could share with young children, ages 5 years and up, to give them a glimpse of Nigeria, its people and culture. I liked the photographs which accurately depicted various professions/lifestyles in Nigeria and some of them provide wonderful ideas for story book extensions. For example, the photograph of the grandmother making a traditional outfit could be complemented by presenting to the children a few yards of woven fabric that is typically used in Nigeria for such outfits. Other professional roles we see Nigerians in are: BAKER, DOCTOR, WOOD CARVER/CARPENTER, LAWYER, POTTER, BLACKSMITH and FINALLY THE TRADITIONAL NATIVE DOCTOR or HERBALIST who gives us an excellent botanist lesson on plants and their healing properties. All in all, it paints Nigerians as an industrious people, which is what we are.
