Book Description

A Hearthstone Book October 1990
Hey, Grandma! is a handbook for parents who wish to help a child to succeed as a scholar. It covers all age ranges, pre-school through secondary education, stresses the importance of incidental learning in the home in the early years, gives clear, concise directives to help a child to read with fluency and comprehension, lists the steps to use in learning to spell a word, contains the 100 addition and subtraction facts, multiplication and division examples to use as speed tests, the mastery of which is necessary for computation of higher mathematics (the "tools" with which to develop "thinking skills"), provides guidelines for homework management and teacher-pupil relationship. The suthor ascribes to the philosophy that "inside every normal child there is bright child, if only someone will open his/her mind."

Hey, Grandma! was named from an incident involving guidance of grandchildren, inspiring them to academic excellence.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Education's problem: how to fix the solution." -- Gretchen D. Hellie, Minneapolis Education activist and researcher, Minneapolis Star Triibune, August 20, 1994, refers to, and quotes from, HEY, GRANDMA!, as a response to an earlier editorial on the subject of outcome-based education reforms

"Grandmother channels years' wisdom into a ... book." -- (Bruce Hanson, Des Moines (Iowa) Sunday Register, May 31, 1991)

From the Publisher

Clarine Boyken is one tough taskmaster. Hey, Grandma! is a recipe for putting the emphasis on drill, good grooming, good conduct and turning in neat papers back into the school curriculum. Too much laxity, in Clarine Boyken's view, has been responsible for a steep decline in American educational standards. With the evidence all about us, who can argue her point? If we don't want to become a second-class nation, we must adopt the changes in policy outlined in Hey, Grandma!

Involvement is her key word. Parents who want to help their offspring face tomorrow's challenges as educated adults need to become involved in the whole learning process throughout childhood and adolescence.

Though parent control is advocated, the emphasis of the book is the unselfish, dedicated commitment of the parent to stimulate the child to a lifelong love of leaning. To set high standards and to guide the child to achievement is the finest kind of love.

The little things do matter in life, as Clarine Boyken convincingly shows. Even Newton and Einstein had to learn their multiplication tables.
