Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 3—Oscar loves everything about his grandmother. She makes even the dullest task like washing the dishes fun. But over time, Grandma becomes forgetful and needs help with some activities. Oscar's dad tells him that Grandma needs to live in a place where she will be safe and well cared for. Oscar misses her terribly but soon goes to visit her in her new home. He's a bit afraid, but he meets the staff and some of Grandma's new friends and realizes she's going to be happy there. Her behavior fluctuates, but Oscar sees that her caregivers understand that. It hurts when she yells at him, but he knows she doesn't mean to do it. Oscar's grandmother is suffering from dementia, and this book covers all the basics of the condition and what it means to a young child. At the end, Oscar still feels that she is the best Grandma in the whole wide world. The art is reminiscent of a young child's artwork and complements the young protagonist's narrative. The pacing is strong, and the varied use of space keeps each page fresh. Backmatter fills children in on what dementia is and how it will affect the elderly. This is both an informative and enjoyable read. It will pair well with Mem Fox's Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge (Perfection Learning, 1985), which deals so sensitively with the same issue.—Joan Kindig, James Madison University, Harrisonburg, VA

Dementia is a difficult concept to explain to a child. In her first book, Jessica Shepherd lovingly and gently explains some of the changes that can occur with dementia in a beloved family elder. It has statements and solutions that are easy for a child to understand and to implement. Plus, its pages are filled with opportunities to open communication with a parent or other adult to discuss dementia.
It describes common fears and frustrations of a child, explaining them in clear language.
Ms. Shepherd even tackles a hospital bed and wheelchair, making them non-threatening and no longer scary. This could easily lead to discussions of other medical equipment, such as a walker or oxygen.
This book is an excellent resource for children and their families dealing with dementia in a family member or friend. I highly recommend it as a resource for families and professionals.
