More About the Author

Carol J. Almson was born in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in the small town of Ottawa where unsupervised kids could walk to Blackhawk Beach and play in the overgrown expanse of an empty canal bed. She grows up in poverty-stricken childhood - emotional as well as physical - followed by a pregnancy in high school and a hasty marriage which ends five years later after terrible brutality. During this time she not only graduates from high school but also earns a college degree. Meanwhile, she begins to discover that she is a lesbian, becomes plagued with self doubt, and binge drinks to hide her shame.

At this point she is well on her way to a life filled with discrimination, uncertainty, and challenges which lead to achievement and unexpected adventures. In San Francisco she meets Boom Boom Fontane and together they attend the Esalen Institute where Carol becomes motivated to explore her human potential. After moving to Haight Ashbury, her path takes many twist and turns all the way from the gates of Auschwitz to thieving Arabs in Jerusalem and a naughty Greek at the Beehive Tombs. In spite of many misadventures every obstacle is met as a challenge and is turned into an adventure which deepens her self-knowledge and prepares her for the next test.

Having earned a PhD in education in 1977, Almson spent over three decades in education as a teacher, consultant, and administrator. She dedicated her memoir to her two granddaughters, Molly and Emily, and finished it shortly before her seventieth birthday. In the process she learned self-acceptance and experienced a deep sense of peace. Today she finds solace and renewal in a secluded log cabin in Utah.
