Grandma's cat eludes the fascinated narrator until she tempers her exuberance: instead of chasing him, she courts the cat gently and patiently, offering soft pats and a treat.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A girl's attempts to befriend her grandmother's "round and fat" cat are at the sweet center of this brief but witty look at feline behavior. "He hides./ I seek" begins the adventure as the girl's overzealous overtures provoke some serious cat attitude and even a scratch on the nose. When Grandma offers sage but simple advice, "just be very gentle," things soon turn downright snuggly: "I sit./ I clap./ He tries my lap." Ketteman (Not Yet, Yvette) delivers a full roller coaster of emotion with an economy of words. Her rhythmic, rhyming (mostly) couplets speak to every child who has tried desperately to express fondness for a pet. Winborn's (Digby & Kate) sprightly ink-and-watercolor illustrations depict an equally compelling visual story line, expanding on the spare text by showing the often hilarious actions of both cat and kid. The artwork also adds another important dimension: Grandma, gardening in her green overalls, takes care that her plucky young charge is never in too much danger. Ages 4-7.

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 1?Grandma's persnickety feline is appropriately wary of the little girl who chases him around in search of friendship. She pursues him through the garden, up stairs and tree limbs, until finally, he plants his claws on her nose. Grandma wisely suggests another tactic for winning his affections. The child uses gentleness to gain kitty's trust, and after quietly courting him with his favorite treats, the pair become best friends. Grandma's Cat is delightfully told in brief, rhymed sentences that make a charming group or individual read-aloud, yet are simple enough for beginning readers to try on their own. The pastel garden setting is whimsically rendered in watercolor, with very likable, expressive characters that perfectly complement this satisfying story.?Christina Linz, Alachua County Library District, Gainesville,

5.0 out of 5 stars A vivid book easy for all children to read!, November 1, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Grandma's Cat (Hardcover)
I've never seen my sister so enthralled with one book. She knows that's how cats really act so she can relate to the book. The bright and colorful pictures keep her entertained for hours. It's easy to read and easy to understand. I don't know if she is going to let me return the book to the library before her own book comes in the mail!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pictures worth 1000 words for a toddler!, April 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Grandma's Cat (Hardcover)
Our toddler, who understands about cat scratches firsthand, can relate to the story of the little girl who doesn't know how to become friends with her grandma's cat, and we think it's a great teaching tool--If you pull the cat's tail, this is what happens ... !!!! Best thing about the book is the illustrations. The story is set in a wonderful "grandma's garden". My husband & I love the way the cat is drawn--he's not a cute, cuddly thing, he shows real "cat personality," with very feisty eyes. My daughter looks for "grannie" in every picture--something about her really conveys "grandma" to a small child.
