4.0 out of 5 stars Grandma outcooks Collin Street Bakery!
I love fruitcake. Let me rephrase that; I love DELICIOUS fruitcake! In my part of the country the most famous fruitcakes come from the Collin Street Bakery in Corsicana, Texas. They sell zillions of them all over the world and they are delicious. However, after sampling both Grandma's and Collin Street's fruitcake very closely and side by side during the recent Christmas...

2.0 out of 5 stars Too Much Cake, Very Little Fruit & Nuts!
Our family loves fruitcake and it's our Christmas tradition. We like to vary who we buy from because they're all very good, just different on the fruit to nuts ratio. This year we bought Grandma's from Figis (we found it on Figis internet site). I made sure it was the same cake as sold on Amazon before I wrote this review.

I love fruitcake. Let me rephrase that; I love DELICIOUS fruitcake! In my part of the country the most famous fruitcakes come from the Collin Street Bakery in Corsicana, Texas. They sell zillions of them all over the world and they are delicious. However, after sampling both Grandma's and Collin Street's fruitcake very closely and side by side during the recent Christmas holiday, I have to admit that Grandma's is the best. You see, great fruitcake must have 3 parts: 1- cake, 2- fruit & 3- nuts. The trick isn't getting the 3 parts in, but how much of each to use in the fruitcake's creation. Most fruitcakes are way too much cake and not enough fruit and nuts. Collin Street Bakery's fruitcakes have a little too much cake and a few too many nuts and therefore, not enough fruit. Grandma's fruitcake has everything JUST RIGHT! That is the secret. Before this past Christmas I would have said that nobody on this planet could make a better fruitcake than Collin Street Bakery. But now? Buy yourself a GRANDMA'S fruitcake and you'll probably start a new family tradition. From now on our family will be having a new holiday guest at our house. GRANDMA's FRUITCAKE will be invited to all of our special occasions. Yummmmmmmmmmmm. I just had another bite and yummmmmmmmmm. God bless. Mike

5.0 out of 5 stars Tried many. This is the best., November 26, 2007

I've tried many and made my own in my search for the perfect fruitcake, and Grandma's fruitcake is the best I have had.

1. It has fruit, not that horrid candied citrine.
2. The added liquors give the cake wonderful added flavor and doesn't overwhelm the fruits and nuts.
3. It is wonderfully moist.

If people say they don't like fruitcake, they have never tried a Grandma's fruitcake.

4.0 out of 5 stars for lovers of "spirited" fruitcake, December 4, 2011
This review is from: Grandmas Original Fruit and Nut Cake Ring (Misc.)
Ah, fruitcake! One of the most misaligned of all incredible edibles--you either love it or you shudder at the very mention of the word "fruitcake". I come from a long line of fruitcake lovers, and my own grandmother made wonderful fruitcakes. Nothing will ever taste as good as those cakes, but then again, my Gran was "the greatest cook ever". She would make the cakes several weeks ahead of time, and then she kept them wrapped up in a tin in the pantry to properly "age". The aging process was aided and abetted by regular dousings with apple wine. These fruitcakes were deep, dark, and somewhat mysterious. Delicious! "Grandmas Original Fruit and Nut Cake Ring" definitely has a "spirited" flavor from the added bourbon, brandy, and rum. It's very fragrant! I ordered one for my Mom one year, and even though the cake was well-packaged, we could smell the rich aroma before we even opened the box. I ate only one slice, and then I let Mom enjoy the rest of the cake. She was content with the gift, and "if Mama's happy, then everybody's happy". This cake is a cut above the usual commercial fruitcake product, and if you enjoy cakes which have the added liquor flavor, then you will like this cake.

The main problem is that we got more cake than fruit and nuts. It was also somewhat dry, probably because of the lack of moist fruit. The cake tastes quite good, but definitely not worth $30 for a good-tasting cake with a little bit of fruit and nuts. Seeing all the other glowing reviews, we probably got a batch that wasn't thrown out by quality assurance. What a disappointment! The photos look great, but they don't match what we received.

I purchased this cake for a very dear friend who is in a veterans hospital. He wanted one for Christmas but I could not find any where I live. When I found this particular one, Grandmas Original Fruit and Nut Cake Ring on Amazon, I thought it was a little expensive but it looked so good on the picture, I thought why not you get what you pay for.... My friend can't stop talking about how delicious it was..He says we must have paid a lot for it because it was so good. I'm going to get another one for him for Easter....

5.0 out of 5 stars Love at first bite, November 23, 2011
This review is from: Grandmas Original Fruit and Nut Cake Ring (Misc.)
I had only had small taste's of fruitcake over the years none of which I liked until I was working at Hadley's :(, which is no longer in business as a retail store, they brought out the Grandma's for samples as Hadley's was well known for and so I thought I would try a small piece just to see if it was like all the others. Let's just say it is a good thing it is expensive because I would eat way too much if it was any less expensive. Back then we sold the small loaf for $14.95 so it hasn't gone up too much it price that was about 30 years ago.

I also like the fact that all the ingredients are pronounceable like the ice cream commercials. I think I did have one once that I bought at a local grocery store that was dry, it was on the clearance table which should have told be something. I hope to be able to buy some this year, it is a very rare but very welcome treat for me. Yumm!

Reminded me of what a real homemade fruitcake tasted like. Wish they were larger for the price paid, but once a year purchase is worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Overpriced Fruitcake In The World, December 12, 2008
By
This review is from: Grandmas Original Fruit and Nut Cake Ring (Misc.)
Grandmas has been making my absolute favorite fruitcake for many years. None other compares! The problem is that for the price of the 2 pound cake I feel like i should be getting a 5 pound cake. They have increased their price to the point I have trouble justifying it.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you love fruitcake AND if you hate fruitcake, December 3, 2009
By
This review is from: Grandmas Original Fruit and Nut Cake Ring (Misc.)
If you hate fruitcake it is because you've never had a good one, not because you hate fruitcake. If you want to try the best fruitcake try Grandma's, then and only then can you go to Manitou, Colorado and slingshot it into the heavens because if you TRULY hate fruitcake like it's an obsession then you have to prove your hate with Grandma's and I have yet to find the human who can speak anything but passionate love for Grandma's fruitcake. The fact is most people simply grew up on those gelatinous bricks sold in the A&P at Christmas time and for some unknown reason believe every fruitcake is the same. Sort of like saying you hate pizza when the only one you've ever tasted came from the frozen-food section.

I just received this fruit cake ("nut cake") and couldn't wait to try it. OMG! It has just the right amount of nuts and fruit. But what makes this cake different is the Brandy. You can actually taste it. The brandy is what make's it juicy and moist. My mother made her's with brandy and I've never found one to equal her's. At last I've found one that does. If you're a fruit cake lover, or not, you must try this one it is scrumptious. I can't wait to serve this with coffee to my friends.
