Book Description

4 and upP and up

Katy is having one of those days, and so is her mother. Katy has the flu, she can't go outside and she is hot, achy, and angry. Each time Katy goes to her room, she slams the door. Hard.

Inside her room Katy is grumping about, complaining, when, out of the blue, a voice pipes up. Speaking to her is the Grandmother Doll, which belonged to Katy's mother years ago.

When Katy complains about not being allowed to watch TV, the Grandmother Doll mentions that she doesn't have a TV at all. Katy thinks and then she goes to her junk box, where with a few simple things she finds there and a little inventiveness, she is able to make a TV for them both to watch.

When Katy complains about not being allowed any more cookies, the Grandmother Doll remarks that she has no cookies at all. Back to the junk box Katy goes, and this time she makes a little stove for the Grandmother Doll. Quickly the doll bakes a delicious batch of chocolate chip cookies. The two of them watch TV and eat cookies until they are full.

Finally, when Katy complains that it is time to go to bed, the Grandmother Doll reminds Katy that she does not even have a bed. Presto, Katy assembles a bed for the Grandmother Doll and sets it right beside her own. Before long they are both tucked in and fast asleep.

Without Katy realizing it, she and the Grandmother Doll have passed an entire day playing together and all the grumpiness is forgotten. When Katy's mother comes in to say goodnight, she spies the TV, smells the chocolate chip cookies, and sees the Grandmother Doll happily tucked into her new bed. Katy's mom knows that the Grandmother Doll has been up to her old tricks again.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

reS-Gr 2-Katy, crankily recovering from the flu, and her mother, out of patience, are having a day of clashes. After being told to turn the TV off, the little girl "stomps" upstairs to her room. Suddenly, her mother's old Grandmother Doll talks to her, "-I can't watch TV because I don't have a TV." Katy builds one from a box, crayons, and paper, and the pair look at monster shows together. Next, Katy wants too many cookies. After her mother tells her to stop eating them, she returns to her room. She constructs a stove and the doll bakes chocolate cookies, which the two devour. After the child fusses about going to bed, her companion points out that she doesn't even have a bed, and Katy makes her one. When the child's mother comes in to say good night, she sees the television set and smells the cookies. Leaning over the sleeping Grandmother Doll, she whispers, "At it again?" Cartoonlike ink-and-watercolor illustrations in cross, hot shades of red and yellow splash across the pages, only cooling off to soft purples and blues at bedtime. Simple and spirited, this charming, magical story encourages creative play and links the lives of mother and daughter.

5.0 out of 5 stars 3 Generations of Grouchiness: The Grandmother Doll, March 11, 2007
This review is from: The Grandmother Doll (Paperback)
Finally, a little dysfunction!! With all the stomps, sneers and slams you would expect on the third day of influenza-induced confinement, the candor of this warm, magical story is a rare and welcome treat.

4.0 out of 5 stars Charming picture book, good message, September 13, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Grandmother Doll (Paperback)
This is a charming book. It also illustrates the little girl solving her boredom by using her imagination. She makes a TV, stove and bed for her Grandmother Doll out of cardboard boxes. Subtle humor for parents as well. My 5 and 6 year old girls love it
