Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4-In this brief book, a Poarch Creek Indian woman thinks back to when she was 12 and a respected elder taught her traditional basketmaking. After finishing her first lopsided effort, Anna starts a second one, gathering plants for dyeing the straw as well as helping Grandmother Five Baskets collect healing herbs. As the work continues into summer, the girl's initial interest and enthusiasm wanes, and it is Thanksgiving before she finishes the third. When Anna completes five baskets, the woman explains that the first three represent the stages of life, while the last two represent the outer and inner person. The lesson of life comes full circle as Anna, 20 years later, begins the process with her own child. This warm family story written in simple language is rich in detail of everyday Indian home life as well as of the ritual designs in the baskets themselves. A short afterword explains the history of the Poarch Creek Indians, who have lived for almost 150 years in Alabama. The softly shaded full-page pencil drawings complement well this nostalgic rite of passage. This tale's gentle message of the necessity of discipline and perseverance in producing a simple object of beauty is valuable for all children, and offers them an intimate glimpse into a loving Native American community.

5.0 out of 5 stars Authenic...., December 21, 1998

This review is from: Grandmother Five Baskets (Paperback)
I personally know the author, illustrator, and the woman who is illustrated. I must say that this book is authenic from the word go.. Ms. Gale Thrower, Tribal Specialist, with the Poarch Creek Indians in Atmore, Alabama is who this is written and illustrated about. Anyone who is familiar with her, knows that she practices the old ways of the Creek Indians and is very knowledgeable about the Creeks. I am very honored to call this lady a friend. This book is great for 7 - 12 year olds. Highly recommeded!!!!
