1.0 out of 5 stars You should be aware...
I'm a soon to be parent and I ordered this book for my mother. I either did not read the reviews or the description of the book close enough, and was not aware that the book had religious references. I knew I ordered the wrong book when the first page mentioned "the Lord". Other references included "praising God" with your grandmother and Jesus' birth on Christmas...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excitement of being a grandmother......, June 1, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Grandmother's Book of Promises (Hardcover)
When I first found out that I was going to be a grandmother for the first time, I started noticing books about grandmothers. I looked through this book and thought it was so cute, so I bought it, intending to give it to my grandchild.
When my son was married, his wife had a seven year old daughter. Now that they are expecting, I decided I needed to make her daughter feel special to me before the baby was born. They haven't been married for long, so I haven't had the chance to bond with her as yet. So, one day, when she was at my house and climbing all over my son, I decided she needed something to settle her down, so I went and got this book and gave it to her. She immediately wanted to read it with me. So she began reading and looking at the pictures. It got her attention quickly with the wording of the way grandmothers and their grandchildren could spend quality time. She'd read and then look at me with those big brown eyes and smile or giggle. It was the first time we had connected as a grandmother and grandchild. I finished the last couple of pages for her as she sat in my lap. When we finished it, she hugged my neck. That was when my heart melted for the first time as a "Grammy."
I went shopping yesterday and bought some super soaker water guns that she and I could play with...which was a way to have fun together, which is the theme of this book. I can't wait until I surprise her with them. It is a sweet book to share with your grandchild about how you can bond with your grandchild by doing silly things. Leave the discipline to the parents and just enjoy them. It was the first time I had experienced the unconditional love that a grandchild can give you in return. I might be going through the experience of a first grandchild's birth, but I have learned that this will surely be my second grandchild; my first is a seven year old little girl with big brown eyes that loved this book.

I knew I ordered the wrong book when the first page mentioned "the Lord". Other references included "praising God" with your grandmother and Jesus' birth on Christmas. Don't get me wrong, I'm not putting down this book because of it's religious nature, personally - it's not for me, but people should be aware of its contents.

I'm sure that many people find this a beautiful book and I'm not doubting that, I'm just saying that it may not be suitable for certain families.

I bought this book for my twin granddaughters, and am very pleased. I especially like the part where I can write in my personal promises to each of them.
It's a book that I hope my granddaughters will cherish, as I certainly will.

This is a wonderful book that any Grandmother would be proud to give to her grandchild. It's full of promises to do the fun things in life with their grandchild. I'm planning on giving it to each family where I have grandbabies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Promises!, June 8, 2007

This book does an amazing job of making the connection between a grandmother and her grandchild. It's wonderful to make these promises and have my granddaughter realize that when we do these things that promises are being kept. It's a book to read over and over and over as the grandchildren never tire of hearing the promises made to them.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sadly Disappointed, December 18, 2011

I felt that this Grandma did too many things that a parent would do. Though many were sweet and appropriate, only a guardian grandparent or one that had a grandchild full time for some reason for some length of time would do all the things the poem suggests. For a Grandparent that lives nearby, much of this would not occur. I spend a lot of time with my grandchildren and could not give this book to them. Therefore, I was disappointed in the book. However, the illustrations were lovely.

I bought this book for my sister, who just became a grandmother. She has read it repeatedly to her new granddaughter. The book is a series of promises from the grandmother to the grandchild. Very sweet book.
