I was delighted to find this book. for years I have admired quilts made with 3-D flowers, but feared that they were too difficult of a challenge to take on. Burns and Knoechel have provided me with an easy-to-follow guide to constructing these flowers--and, yes, I have been able to actually make several of them (as samples) in a short time.
Besides the pattern for the main quilt, the book provides detailed instructions for two other projects and photos of others that provide inspiration to use the included patterns as a springboard for original applications of their designs. I found all of the instructions to be very thorough...and very easy to follow. The authors have kindly provided color photographs to "show" as well as "tell" through the applique process.
I would recommend this book to any quilter, from beginner to advanced, for its combination of technical instruction, quilt history and imagination stimulation.

This quilt book is so much fun and so interesting to read, you can pick it up and just enjoy it without sewing a stitch.

Her directions and pictures are very good. It is like potatoe chips can't do just one block to try it, you keep wanting to do more.

Eleanor Burns and her sister Patricia Knoechel put together an excellent book. This quilt was created, designed and published in 1928 and 1929. The story and copyright info are included early in the book and are very interesing. Worth the read.

I was lucky to view the most of the TV series with them showing their techniques and sharing thoughts and memories and to be able to purchase the book, pre-printed fusible interfacing and templates at that time (fusible and templates not available on Amazon - but check Eleanor Burns' site.) Purchased fabrics over the last 12 years for "someday-when-I-retire" which is NOW since I was laid off then retired.

The directions are excellent, each flower pattern is 6 pages, (1) history, (2) placement guide, (3) yardage including color for both flat and 3-d, (4) full size pattern sheet, (5 & 6) directions. (flat and 3-D are clearly detailed.) Very easy to follow!

I have started and am finding this an easy to use and an interesting book - plus, I'm getting a beautiful quilt done! slowly but surely.

I read the book first before attempting to make this quilt. I watch Eleanor Burns' show, Quilt in a Day, on TV and could almost hear Miss Eleanor's voice as I read the book. I found the book provides clear, well written instructions on how to make this complex quilt. To understand the instructions better, you should already have a good understanding of the basics of quilting and applique techniques.

This quilt is absolutely charming, but what I like best is how easy it is to make with the way Eleanor Burns and her sister Patricia Knoechel teach the processes for doing both flat and 3-dimensional applique. With these instructions, this makes a wonderful project that can be done by any quilter from beginner to expert. As a learner who learns best by watching, I think it's even easier if you watch the related set of DVDs: Quilt in a Day Grandmother's Garden Quilt with Eleanor Burns -- 4-DVD SET.

I'm not sure I'll ever get around to making this, but I loved this book so much that I bought all the printed fusible interfacing necessary, just in case I do.

I love needle-turn and starch-prepared appliqué, especially with pieced backgrounds, but Eleanor's fusible method is very fast and beautiful.

I used this method to make 48 Sunbonnet Sue and Suspender Sam blocks for a swap - nobody in their right mind makes appliqué blocks for a swap, but those weren't much more difficult than a pieced block, thanks to the fusible interfacing idea.

I don't remember for sure, but I believe invisible nylon is recommended and that's what I used for the swap blocks.

Coping with that thread was the hardest part of this method and I think I gave up and did the last half by hand. In The future, I will always go with MonoPoly by Superior Threads, or Sulky's invisible clear or smoke. Either of those will be like night and day compared to nylon thread.

Eleanor is a genius at coming up with ways to make the difficult things go more easily. Her books are always a treasure trove of great ideas and clear instructions and this book is no exception.

This is one super duper book! I love it.
There are so many, many patterns. In her usual style,
Eleanor has again brought us a great book.
Well written patterns and directions. Extras to help you out.
You can't find a better author to write a quilting book in my
opinion. Get this one, you won't regret it!
