5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully written and beautifully illustrated!
Wonderfully written and beautifully illustrated! This book delves inside of a child's perception of race, heritage, and skin color. The messages of self-love and African pride taught by the Grandfather are touching and will warm the hearts of the Parents while teaching the Children a sense of pride! A must read for children of all ages and nationalities.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good title but....
I am a teacher and book lover. I bought this book and found it very disappointing. I think that 4 yr olds need books to get to the heart of the story quickly and simply. This story does neither. It is long/ wordy and provides way to much information to be grasped by young children. I like the title and wish the author had simply answered her own question.

5.0 out of 5 stars The book reveals Black culture in an endearing way., October 1, 1999

This book is a big hit in our multicultural children's library! A grandfather teaches his grandson the history of African Americans. Looking back on history, grandpa also looks ahead to the future of his sensitive grandchild -- who will be grounded in the African past as he faces an American future. Splendid, splendid, splendid!

This book has helped tremendously in teaching my daughter to love her skin and herself. The story is enchanting, and the pictures only add to the enjoyment.

The book is "wordy" but the message is very important.

My big issue with this book as a teacher is related to the initial concept that black is considered a bad color. Nothing could be further from the true. That concept perpetuates feelings of racial inferiority among African-Americans.

In reality, as every artist and many others know, every color has a positive and a negative quality.

Black is sometimes used negatively but consider that black is the formal color, black is the upperclass color, and many other good associations.

To be fair, the book is trying to help the situation. It is worth having for older youngsters.

Another customer rated this book with 2 stars and said it was too long and too wordy for 4 year olds. Well, duh! It says in the book description: Ages 9-12. Elementary school kids (and middle school too) are for whom this book was written (not the preschoolers).

The book is very touching and makes you appreciate other people's cultures.
