Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-- Set in Depression era New England, this is the story of a child's disappointment in adults and the lessons she learns about asserting herself. Lizzie, 12, lives with her widowed father and younger sister in the shadow of her Aunt Mary Margaret, upon whom her father relies to provide a woman's touch and a sense of tradition for his daughters. The condescending treatment they receive from their aunt and four cousins irritates Lizzie, particularly since Papa insists they spend Christmas with them. Grandpa Jake, a drifter whom the girls have never met, bursts on the scene, moving in and offering the girls hope for a Christmas of their own. Lizzie's world is shaken when, on the eve of her dance recital, Grandpa Jake packs up and goes to Florida for the holidays. All ends happily, however, when Lizzie confronts first her father about her need to have a Christmas of their own and then her dance teacher who has raised her prices beyond Lizzie's father's means. In this simply told and easily read novel, Ames draws very real characters and situations. Grandpa Jake is clearly a person with human weaknesses who nevertheless serves as the catalyst for needed change in his son's family. The importance of balancing concern for others with self-interest and the necessity to speak out for oneself come through without being heavyhanded. A grand choice for all libraries.
