Book Description

April 23, 2008

This series of reflections on the role of a grandfather will be an inspiration and a pleasure to all grandparents.

Fourteen years ago, Mike Milligan learned he would become a grandfather for the first time. He was surprised to find that there was little or no information available on what it means to be a grandfather, how to make the most of the experience, and how to be the best grandfather possible. Sure, there were shelves of books dedicated to grandmothers—all with cuddly covers depicting spring bouquets or gentle little lambs. But there was not a single book that spoke to him, a sixty-four-year-old grandfather-to-be. It struck him that there were countless other grandfathers out there experiencing this same feeling of neglect. With over a decade of grandparenting under his belt, Milligan is thrilled to offer his Grandpa Rules.

Over the years, Milligan has discovered some universal rules that apply to grandfathers everywhere. For example, the "let it slide" rule has taught him to take it in stride when he hears one of his grandchildren say, "Grandpa sure dresses funny." Imbued with Milligan's humor, honed during his career in comedy writing for television (The Jeffersons, All in the Family, etc.), Grandpa Rules will entertain and delight millions of grandfathers, as well as those who will soon earn the exalted title of "Grandpa." It's the perfect gift for a special grandfather, for Father's Day, a birthday, the birth of a grandchild, or just for a grandpa to read and enjoy during one of his many bathroom visits.

1.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended?, September 21, 2008

I got 2 of these for my grandparents to be. Thankfully I previewed one before passing them on as gifts. (I did not pass them along to anybody.)

This book is not smart-stupid, it's stupid-stupid. This in and of itself wouldn't be so bad if there weren't typo's (a missing word here, a juxtaposed pair there) that made me feel like the book must not have had an editor, and the author had indeed pestered Bill Crosby until he wrote a nice Foreword so that the author would leave him alone.

In conclusion, if you you know a grandpa/grandpa-to-be who likes really dumb humor, or who will appreciate the thought of the gift but never actually READ the book, I can highly recommend it.

Great book! Poignant and laugh-out-loud funny! Any grandparent will love it! Perfect gift for a boomer grandpa (like me!) or grandpa-to-be! Dave Barry, Lewis Grizzard, Bob Greene move over! Dare you to read one page and not want to read the whole thing. A fun, easy, read--I didn't want it to end. Can't wait for the sequel!

I started reading this book seated on my porch while having lunch. I had to come in the house because I was afraid the neighbours might think I had lost it!! I have never laughed so consistantly while reading a book. It is hilarious!! I give grandparenting prenatal classes and I bought the book as a possible reference for my students............it WILL be referred. It is insightful and helpful as well as very entertaining...........
