I stumbled upon Otis Gibbs while listening to satellite radio and was immediately intrigued by his unique voice. It is raw and full of emotion. Kind of grabs you and won't let go. The album begins with Caroline (my favorite)a truly haunting song. Then you are off on a journey across small town America from fair grounds to truck stops. Gibbs sings about those you see but don't have the courage to approach but when you listen to the music you are right there with them. It's not a happy album but the artistry is amazing.

FOUR AND A HALF stars~
This is one CD that tells a story that seldom gets HEARD. Otis Gibbs may appear to be a backwoods auto mechanic, but truly he is a man/musician/observer of deep soul and intellect. In photography, this CD would be a black and white photo.
Quite by accident I saw him in concert a few years back and have been hooked and have hooked many others by encouraging every sincere soul I know to give Grandpa Walked a Picketline a listen. (Preferably when you're ready to attentively listen, Otis serves a full meal- not a light snack.) I sat with my son on a hillside overlooking a creek, with this CD playing from my truck's stereo. At the time, my son was into Ska and Metal and Lord knows what else...I recall him turning to me, "Who IS this?!" was his surprising response. Needless to say, he stole my CD.

I love history and the stories that tell of the rawness of the deal, or the ripeness of the evolution of an idea.
Otis Gibbs is one fine story teller with the perspective of a hobo who not only enjoys the finer things in life, like stars overhead and train whistles off in the distance but also the black and white of what use to be Red, White and Blue. I don't suppose he is for everyone, but I find him earnest and lacking nothing in the area of honesty and self awareness.
(I am not much of a musician, so stark offerings on the playing part comes from a hayseed's perspective- I like his picking and strumming- it is as if a carpenter were nailing up a window frame with the glass already installed.)

I love several genres of music, from classical to hard rock. Otis' music is in a league of its own though, I never tire of his albums and own all of them. Among them "Grandpa" is still my favorite.
