My pregnant daughter-in-law gave this to me. This will be our first grandchild. We are thrilled and excited, but it has been decades since I was looking to purchase port a cribs, car seats etc.

The writing is clear and fun. She gives very specific advice about what to buy and what is not necessary. She handles big issues of not interfering or criticizing, but in a humorous way we can all relate to.

After I read this slim book, I ordered more to give to my friends who are lucky to be joining the ranks of grandparents. This is a keeper!

This book is VERY basic and just a guide to surface grandparenting. If you are past this and looking for solutions to issues, it is not very helpful. Becoming a Grandmother and Essential Grandparenting were much more helpful w/ offering solutions for me. I agree that it is a great gift for a first time grandmother before the baby is born, if given by a friend. If given by a daughter or in-law, it could require some real diplomacy in the presentation!

My husband and I are about to have the first grandchildren for both sides of our family. I wanted to get the grandmas an interesting read for Christmas this year and after reviewing other titles and reading reviews I thought this is the one. I am so glad I made that decision. I gave it a quick read before passing along and thought it was lighthearted, but full of some great information and good reminders for folks who haven't had small children in the family for a while. I also appreciated discussions about letting the parents decide on discipline and schedules and to be supportive. As a new mom I know I'll get tons of advice!! My mom, stepmom and his mother have all raved about it and all seem to be reading and enjoying the contents. I have a feeling the grandpas will be reading it next. Makes a great gift for those anxious grandparents!!

I have now bought 4 of these books for my friends who are becoming new grandparents and every one of them has loved it -- a perfect gift!

I thought this was a great book to buy as a gift for my mother-in-law when I was pregnant with her first grandchild. It is full of updated childcare tips as well as suggestions for how the grandparents can assist and support the new family without stepping on anyone's toes (advice my mother-in-law was in desperate need of). Unfortunately, the grandmother who received this book from me was offended and thought it best to wait to divulge this information until the baby was born and the sleep-deprived parents were unsure how to react. Apparently she knows everything... sadly she hasn't seen her grandson more than a handful of times and has yet to exhibit any kind of knowledge about children (although she tells me that my 4-month-old will soon be putting things in his pockets and I better check them when I do the laundry).
