Wow!
Not sure why someone gave it just 3 stars. I found it beautifully written, beautifully illustrated and beautifully moving. My 8 year-old daughter choked up, with her eyes on the verge of tears after reading it, as we just returned from visiting her old grandpa, who also likes to tell stories. No "Selma"
I ordered this book after reading Bauer's "Selma," which is totally delightful. This book is OK but I don't like it nearly as well as "Selma."

Not sure why someone gave it just 3 stars. I found it beautifully written, beautifully illustrated and beautifully moving. My 8 year-old daughter choked up, with her eyes on the verge of tears after reading it, as we just returned from visiting her old grandpa, who also likes to tell stories. The book deals with the blunt reality of mortality, but in cheerful, upbeat, beautiful way (as much as possible when realistically addressing that grim reality) with a just-right ending, as the survivors move on with life.

I first saw this book on a trip in Thailand. I was mesmerized by the story, even without the words in English (it was in the original German). When I saw that it was translated into English I was thrilled and immediately picked up a copy.
This book has beautiful art with masterful layered storytelling that melds words and pictures together.
