Grandpas Are for Finding Worms, July 12, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Grandpas Are For Finding Worms (Lift-the-Flap, Puffin) (Paperback)
A terrific little book for kids about grandpas & all the fun things they can do together. It is delightfully illustrated with grandpas and children of different ethnic backgrounds throughout the book. It has "large" lift-the-flap pages with lots of colorful illustrations there too. This book is very well constructed & durable, which was important to me being a paperback with flaps to lift by little & sometimes not so gentle hands. My two and a half year old granddaughter loves this book and Poppy enjoys it too! When reading the book we substitute Poppy for grandpa since that is what she calls her grandpa. We are now awaiting the arrival of the other Puffin Lift-the-Flap books, Daddies Are for Catching Fireflies, Mommies Are for Counting Stars, & Grandmas Are for Giving Tickles by Harriet Ziefert.

Sweet View of Grandpas to Share with Kids, February 8, 2006
This review is from: Grandpas Are For Finding Worms (Lift-the-Flap, Puffin) (Paperback)
This book is a sweet book about things that grandpas do for and with their grandkids. Some of the things grandpas do are active and non-traditional.
The kids/grandpas are from different ethnic backgrounds, as another reviewer mentioned, and they are different ages. Both really make the book very contemporary and, I find, easy to relate to.
The other important thing is that the book is very sturdy. My kids read this everyday. They are now 15 months and have had it for a few months and not one flap has torn. This is remarkable because my son is sometimes a fast flap lifter which results in flaps that I have to tape back on.
I like the illustrations - they aren't the typical over-the-top bold illustrations done almost exclusively in primary colors. The colors are softer and the figures are drawn in a way that reminds me of a sophisticated cartoon.
Check out the grandma book from the same author. It is even better.

Great Grandparent book, November 6, 2007
This review is from: Grandpas Are For Finding Worms (Lift-the-Flap, Puffin) (Paperback)
My son loves the two Lift-the-flap Puffin books he has (this one and "Fathers are for...")! The flaps are very durable and it is nice that the flaps are in unusual shapes and what is underneath is integrated into the story. When we gave my son the books, at 18months (father's day presents) he would not put them down, just "read" them over and over again. We even ended up buying an extra book to give grandpa so he could read it to him on the phone (we have a long distance family). The only thing is that neither grandfathers in our family do a lot of the activities mentioned in the book (they arent into digging up worms and other things shown), but that is ok, the idea is that our son get and maintain a sense of family even though we are away from everyone, and this books helps with that purpose, from a parent's view, and my son loves the books, the exploration of the flaps, and the illustrations, so it has his vote too!
