Book Description

3 and upP and up
Grandpa's teeth, which were handmade by the finest Swiss craftsmen, have been stolen! Officer Rate arrives on the crime scene to investigate. He puts up WANTED posters for the missing teeth and rounds up the usual subjects. Grandpa even goes on the famous TV show Unsolved Crimes. But the crime remains unsolved. What is Grandpa going to do? And why does everyone in town keep smiling all the time?

Popular Australian cartoonist Rod Clement, the author and illustrator of Just Another Ordinary Day,  has created another hilarious tale of misadventure. Combining tongue-in-cheek text with his uniquely zany illustrations, Clement has created the funniest crime story of the century, with the wackiest solution ever! Grandpa's teeth have mysteriously disappeared, and the whole town is under suspicion. The only way for people to prove they are innocent is to smile'all the time! When will the dastardly crime be solved? Best-selling Australian author and artist Rod Clement has created another wickedly funny picture book that will make children grin until their teeth fall out!

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3?Grandpa's very expensive, custom-made false teeth have been stolen. The police are alerted and an artist's rendering of the missing choppers is posted as "wanted" all over town. Even though "Unsolved Crimes" broadcasts a reenactment on television and dentures are found in the mailbox, none are the missing ones. Grandpa suspects everyone, so townsfolk smile widely to show that their teeth are their own. Finally, people of the town rally to Grandpa's cause and kick in to replace his teeth. Now everyone is grinning, including Grandpa's always dour dog, Gump, who smiles a very "familiar" smile. The text reinforces the humor in the pictures, displaying Grandpa's distinct toothless talk, "It'sth much more stherious. It'sth my teeth?they've been sthtolen." Clement's slightly exaggerated characters are perfectly suited to this toothy tale. Pictures extend the text as evidenced in the search of Grandpa's messy room where everything from apple cores to bugs are found, but not teeth. Grandpa's Teeth is a hoot.?Susan M. From Booklist

Ages 4^-8. It's a "disthasthter" when Grandpa's false teeth are stolen. For one thing, it makes him talk like a teakettle. For another, these were no ordinary dentures. "Thosthe teeth were sthpecial," he whistles, "handmade by the finestht Sthwissth craftsthmen." Despite Grandpa's appearance on the TV show Unsolved Crimes, the police remain baffled, and soon the town is in an uproar. For everyone is suspect, and the only way to prove you're not the thief is to grin broadly enough to show all your own choppers. The sight of so many dazzling ivories is enough to scare the tourists away, and the specter of economic ruin looms. After all this inspired nonsense, how Grandpa finally gets some new teeth is a tad anticlimactic. And anyone who has read William Joyce's A Day with Wilbur Robinson (1990) won't be a bit surprised by the identity of the thief. But Australian cartoonist Clement's pictures are a hoot and a half, and his story has enough sly touches to keep readers grinning . . . toothily! Michael Cart

5.0 out of 5 stars My 2nd Graders Love This Book!, July 9, 2000
By
Sharolyn (Pontotoc, MS USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Grandpa's Teeth (Hardcover)
This funny story about Grandpa's missing teeth is sure to be a favorite for children ages 6-9! After the family has searched everywhere, the police is called in to assist with the search. With the aid of a sketch artist, wanted posters, a police lineup, and even an interview on a tv show, "Unsolved Crimes", they still can't find the culprit. Every one in town walks around smiling so that they won't be hauled into the police station as a suspect. The town gets into such an uproar that a special town meeting is called by the mayor in an effort to come up with a solution. You'll be surprised to see who the culprit was at the end of the story!

Note to teachers: This would be a great book to incorporate into your "Family" studies or to read on Grandparent's Day in Sept. It provides opportunity to talk about people in a community working together to help others. Hey, you could even tie it in with National Dental Week in February . . .Don't forget to brush those teeth!

5.0 out of 5 stars SECOND AND THIRD GRADERS IN TEXAS VOTE THIS THEIR FAVORITE!, March 8, 1999
By
This review is from: Grandpa's Teeth (Hardcover)
DATELINE...HUTCHINS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL , EL CAMPO, TEXAS, MARCH 5, 1999. In a reading program called "Ricebird Readers" after the local sports mascot, second and third graders voted GRANDPA'S TEETH by Rod Clement their favorite book for the 1998-99 school year. The competition includes 19 other selections chosen by the Elementary librarian based on recommended books for the previous year which would be of interest to seven and eight year olds. These books were read to the students by teachers, the librarian, and local volunteer readers over a period of six months. After all students have heard all twenty (20) books, a pep rally is held and then they return to their classroom to vote by "secret" ballot for their favorite. Approximately 500 students voted this year at Hutchins Elementary in El Campo, Texas. GRANDPA'S TEETH got over 100 of those votes to win first place. Second place was THE GHOST OF SIFTY SIFTY SAM by Angela Shelf Meaderis, and third place was HEY, NEW KID by Betsy Duffey. I would like to congratulate Mr. Clement for such an entertaining and obviously popular book! Sincerely, Judy Rowland Elementary Librarian El Campo, Texas

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!!!, August 15, 2001
By A Customer
My 4 yr. old son, his grandmothers, aunt, and I all loved this book. We read it on a trip in the car and we all laughed, especially when my mom read it (she made the toothless parts hysterical). My son cried when we had to take the book back to the library, so I am buying it for him from amazon. I think we adults enjoyed it just as much as he did. A must-have for preschoolers!!!!
