Product Description

Made in the USA, this Granite Ware 33-quart Crab and Crawfish Cooker is constructed of porcelain on carbon steel. The 3-piece set includes a convenient steamer and drainer insert, perfect for lifting out seafood when cooked. The result is a pot that heats rapidly, is easy to clean and has an inert glass surface so there are no PFOA's or other chemicals to alter food's taste, color or healthfulness. Porcelain enamel is the result of fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing, usually between 750 and 850 degrees Celsius. The powder melts and flows and hardens to a durable vitreous coating on a carbon steel core. It creates a smooth, hard finish that won’t burn and resists staining. It’s also non -porous so it won’t trap odors or food particles and provides a low coefficient of friction – meaning that it cleans up easily and, it is corrosion and chemically resistant so it will last a long time. When fired, the vessel is placed on pins so the bottom and sides are hardened during the firing process into one smooth laminated glass surface. You may notice slight pin indentations where the glass has flowed around the pin that supports the base during firing. The pin marks do not compromise the finish or performance of the vessel in any way but you should take additional care in handling if using on glass top stove. The large capacity pot is designed to accommodate big gatherings and produce outstanding results. Dishwasher safe.

Great for Maryland steamed crabs.
R. Howard
The only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars, was that the steamer can be hard to clean if you use a lot of spices.
Ronald Doyle
Just sent it back for a replacement, keeping my fingers crossed the next one comes undamaged.

This is a huge pot! Great for Maryland steamed crabs. Pot is almost too big for the stove - but works great on a propane burner outside. Crabs do steam a little faster because of all the holes in the insert pot. Also, clean-up is a challenge because it's big for the kitchen sink, but finish/granite ware does clean-up well. Great value.

This is a pretty big pot! I'd say you could steam about 3 1/2 dozen or a little more medium sized Maryland crabs. We steamed 3 dozen (but the crabs were a little small) and there was room left for a few more. The insert pot has holes at the bottom and sides which helps them steam faster than when the hole are just at the bottom.

The is the best pot for steaming lobster, hands down. Probably for steaming or cooking anything where you need a pot this size.

It is almost impossible to BOIL lobster at home unless you have a commercial grade stove or go outside to use a propane burner. Most residential ranges don't have the BTU's to bring 5 or 8 gals of water to a rapid boil and keep it boiling once you drop in cold lobsters. And since overcooking is what makes lobster meat tough, cooking time & keeping a rapid boil are critical. So the only way to have lobster at home is to steam them. Plus way easier, quicker & taste better.

Great thing about this pot is what is missing in the general description:

- the bottom measures 15" in diameter. That means it easily straddles 2 burners on my stove that measure 9.5 inches apart center-to-center. Two burners = twice the heat, easier to maintain a rapid boil & steam.

- the bottom of the insert basket sits about 2 inches off the bottom of the outside pot. It takes only 4 QUARTS of water to fill the bottom 2 inches, 5 quarts will bring the water level to about a ¼ inch inside the steam insert. Again, easy to keep 5 quarts boiling over 2 burners.

- the outside pot is ~9.5 inches deep, height without the lid is ~11 inches with the steamer insert in place so no chance of the "froth" overflowing that builds up when you drop in & start steaming lobster. Not so with other steamers where the steamer sits over a bottom pan that is only 5-6" deep.

- the insert basket has holes not only in the bottom but also along the sides. So the steam reaches whatever you are cooking from all sides. More steam = uniform cooking of all food no matter how it is stacked in the steam basket.

I love this pot, but beware, 33 quarts means HUGE. The pot takes up half of my stove - it crosses almost two burners. It's great for what I want to use it for, (mostly hot water canning and tamales) but I really didn't visualize how big it was.

For the most part, I was very pleased with this purchase. I was somewhat disappointed that a pot this size did not have handles ... I almost sent it back.
