Product Description

The Long Howl is for the serious hiking dog. The padded harness wraps entirely around the dog's torso, to avoid any webbing chafing the dog's skin. The fit is adjustable and secure, so the pack bags that attach to the harness ride stable without much twisting. As you take reasonable care, the lopsided carry of lesser dog packs is a thing of the past. The inside layer is stretch woven nylon, the same stuff we use on the skin side of our award winning human packs, for a wrinkle free, smooth surface. The harness can be left on and saddlebags removed for hiking breaks. The harness can also double as a windbreaker and provide insulation for the dog's core in cold conditions.

Good material and design (well made) .

Also the saddle bags can be removed in town so he has a dedicated Service Dog Vest with all the appropriate markings.

Other brands like Ruffwear have straps that contact the dogs skin, which can cause for terrible chafing.

I have had this harness for the past 3 years, with daily use. It has held up amazingly to hiking, swimming, camping, running, and everything else my dog has thrown at it. The harness has gone through my washing machine many times, with no damage. The straps are wide enough to avoid chafing, and strong enough that my 55 lb dog can be picked up by the harness handle. The saddle bags are very secure and do not slide around a lot. And, I love that I can remove the saddle bags when I just need a harness. The visibility strips are also excellent for night time wear. I just got a second dog, and one of the first things that I've bought for him is another one of these harnesses! I highly recommend it!

I just tried my three new packs. I have 2 White German Shepherds and a White Lab puppy. I live in Sedona, Arizona so they have to carry their own water. One gallon per dog. No slip, no tear, no worries. I have even put boat fenders in their packs when we are on LakePowell. I can pull an 80 lb. dog put of the water by its straps!

Looked around at a lot of different options. Found this nice doggie pack by accident. Very nice indeed. Construction is excellent, fit and finish are great too. I really like the extra wide belts on this so it doesn't dig into my best friend. Reflective markings are also a nice touch and are visible from a good distance away - I came home in the dark one night and the Mrs was outside running the dog with the pack on and he was clearly visible from a block away. Another nice option is the removable bags, this allows the pack to be used as a light coat for the winter months if you need. There is also a harness hitch point so you can tie on a sled if you want. My best friend really loves his back pack and I'm really happy I bought it for him.

Pro: Everything

Con: A little pricey but you get what you pay for and this is no exception!

This is a really great pack. The straps keep it in place and they are wide enough that it is comfortable for her wear. Very nice and worth the money to not have a pack sliding all over the place.

I hike on a regular basis. My 9 month old boxer/lab mix has been running and taking day trips with me since he was just a circus peanut. He never had the need for a pack for day trips, but i had a week long hike on the appalachian trail planned so I needed to get him a pack so he could carry his food and bowls(I carry his water). Chief is about 65 pounds and the medium fit perfectly. And man it didnt even phase him. The straps and padding on this pack are made from the material they use on their human packs(a fleece kind of fabric). Other brands like Ruffwear have straps that contact the dogs skin, which can cause for terrible chafing. I actually talked to a guy and his dog on the trail who had the Ruffwear approach pack, and his poor dog was chafing so bad. Where as the Long Haul had no apparent chafing on my dog. Chief was happy as could be. In terms of durability, Chief is the kind of dog that sees a squirrel and runs through any vines or bushes and squeezes through fallen tree branches to get to that critter, and surprisingly the pack held up just fine to the beating. I absolutely love the fact that the side bags can be taken off during breaks and whatnot as well. I would definitely recommend this pack to any of my friends in the future.

This is a great pack. Here are the things I liked about it.
1. durable material and good craftsmanship
2. well made
3. good zippers with ample flap for rain protection
4. very stable on dog with no shifting
5. easy to detach saddle bags
6. lifting handle on top of harness
7. girth straps are wide to help support lifting of the dog
8. loops on top for attaching other gear
9. harness is stiff, distributing the weight more evenly
10. packs are shaped larger in front allowing more weight over shoulders
11. strap over front of chest is wide to absorb any shocks incurred and also adds to pack's overall stability

That said, here are the features I didn't like about it.
1. The girth straps on the harness are hard to attach properly. It's difficult to get the buckle and the attached strap with padding through the loops on the opposite strap while working underneath the dog.
2. The harness is very stiff, not allowing lateral movement with the dog as it walks.
3. Here is the biggest reason why I had to return the pack - My dog measures 23" at the girth, 18" from shoulder to tail, and she's 25 pounds. Here is the sizing chart from the Long Howl Dog Pack Fitting web page.

Measure at widest point.

Size Fits Dog Chest Girth

XS 23-26 Inches
S 26-29 Inches
M 29-32 Inches
L 32-35 Inches
XL 35-38 Inches

I purchased the Extra Small size. As you can see from the Granite Gear sizing chart, this should have worked. However, the pack was too long between her front legs and her back legs. The girth straps are a solid, continuous piece on the harness. She could stand with the pack on, but couldn't sit or walk properly.
