This natural grey-green color, sturdy stone Thai mortar and pestle came from Ang Sila, a seaside-fishing village situated approximately 90 minutes South-East of Bangkok. It is well known for its granite products. The fishermen are not only skilful in catching fish, but also in making implements from granite and have passed on their craftsmanship from generation to generation. Their most renowned products are the mortar and pestle, which are widely used, in Thai households. The mortars have a natural rough-hewn exterior, which has been lacquered to show off the beautiful granite at its best. The mortar's interior is ground smooth (and in unlaquered) to mate with the pestle. This product is a very good all-around mortar and pestle and you need not limit it's use to Thai or Asian cooking. It works well to make pestos and sauces or any ground mixture. There is no doubt that if you want fabulous flavor and strong aromas, you need to grind your own herbs and spices, just before they are added to a recipe. The basic concept with using a mortar and pestle is to add a single ingredient at a time and one ingredient builds on the other forming an eventual well-integrated mixture. The grinding process releases the oils, and flavor essence of the substance. When done carefully you will produce a product that is more flavorful than a product prepared in a food processor.
