5.0 out of 5 stars Another decent coffee boiler
With this granite wear coffee pot you can make cowboy coffee on the campfire or the fire-pit at home. This pot is not really for the stove. This basic boiler coffee pot gets the job done. This pot has the lid attached so it won't fall out. This one is black in color.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hot water squirt gun.
It works great, except that when it's boiling water it occasionally squirts a thin stream of hot water out of the base. Probably a slow leak in the seam, but since we use it for camping it doesn't bother me. Indoor use would be a problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another decent coffee boiler, January 6, 2010

With this granite wear coffee pot you can make cowboy coffee on the campfire or the fire-pit at home. This pot is not really for the stove. This basic boiler coffee pot gets the job done. This pot has the lid attached so it won't fall out. This one is black in color.

Do not confuse a boiler pot with a percolator pot. Boiled coffee is a learned procedure and takes practice. If you cannot face having a bit of grounds in your coffee, or a dented pot with black soot marks on it, this may not be for you.

CARE OF POT: If you want it to stay nice and clean looking, wet the outside with a bit of soap before you put it on the fire, and let it dry to an invisible shield. Soot wipes right off when you wash it. Unless this stays outside all the time, this is a really smart idea to save the nice color on your pot. There is no basket, filter, tube, or other clutter to worry about, I want as little fussiness as possible for campfire coffee.

RECIPE FOR BOILED COFFEE: Here is a recipe from the book I am writing: Use 3/4 cup of coffee grounds per quart of coffee, or one coffee measure scoop per coffee cup of water. Heat the amount of water you intend to use in your pan over a hot fire, until boiling. Then add the coffee grounds, and an eggshell. Yes I said an eggshell. Get the water back to boiling as it slows for a couple of minutes after dropping in the coffee. Pull the pot off the fire and set it aside for a few minutes. Pour in a 1/2 cup of cold water. Along with the eggshells, this helps the grounds sink to the bottom of your pot. Some people do not like the cold water trick as they want the coffee as hot as possible. If that is you, just set it aside about 5 minutes to settle. Now the next secret to this is.... Don't pour it out! Instead use a scooper or a ladle to serve your coffee so that you do not stir up the grounds again. If you do not have a ladle, pour really really slow. That is why the lid on a boiler is supposed to be bigger than a lid on a percolator.

TIP: Remember not to drink the cup to the bottom, throw out the last bit that has grounds, then get a fresh cup. Now when I was a kid there were tricks that my uncles used when hunting involving socks as bag for grounds, but don't even ask me to go there. This type of pot is also convenient for leaving on the fire during the day to keep hot water going for washing dishes, bathing, cooking, or to make some hot chocolate or tea in the cup. If you have to deal with a hot pot, use thick leather gloves, you can use pliers but take care not to crack the hot paint.

Boilers tend to come in bigger sizes that campfire coffee percolators, so if you need a BIG pot, you can get a boiler all the way up to 36 cups. I hope all this helps you, Happy Trails!

I'm not a coffee drinker, but I do enjoy my hot cocoa when I'm camping, and I'm a stickler when it comes to cleaning the pots and pans, both of which require really hot water. This pot, with it's generous 3 quart capacity has proven itself to be an invaluable part of my camp kitchen. Camping is a bit of a compromise in most areas, but it's comforting to have a ready supply of hot water for drinks and cleaning. I'm glad I bought this, and at about $20 is the best deal I've been able to find for this kind of item. I highly recommend it.

Note however, this isn't a percolator with the internal basket and tube. It's a pot only.

I was a little disappointed that it claimed it's made in the USA, but when I received it the coffee boiler clearly says made in Mexico for Columbian Home Products. I was trying to buy Made in the USA. Other than that the product worked great.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good product so far!!, January 1, 2012

So far, this is a good coffee boiler. Only complaint about it is that at bottom of rim is a little metal being burned off, even though I'm being sure not to put flame any higher than medium.
Now, the only complaint I have with Amazon is that they said in the product description this boiler is made in USA but it's not. It is made in Mexico. This I can live with though. If it said it was made in China then I would have definitely sent the garbage back to them for a refund!! I DON'T BUY CHINA MADE CRAP PERIOD!!!
Hope this little review helps.

This is a real coffee BOILER - in other words, it has no percolator. It's for keeping on the stove - kitchen or camp - so that there's always the flavor of coffee in the air, or just a little humidity added to your house. Not many still know how to make real cowboy coffee.

5.0 out of 5 stars Long Life, Good Buy, January 24, 2010

I grew up with a larger version that likely dated back to the 1950s. We inherited it when my dad bought a cabin "fully furnished" around 1972. We used the coffee boiler every time we used the cabin (never for coffee, but it's a very handy way to keep hot water around for washing up, dishes, cocoa, etc.). We sold the cabin "fully furnished" (including the coffee boiler) after my folks died (2006). This model is everything that was, just a little smaller (which works for us). Tough construction, good price, lightening fast shipping. I'll never have to buy another one and might easily pass this on to my grandson. :)

With only one coffee drinker in the family we didn't need a 3 quart coffee boiler for camp coffee. What we needed was an inexpensive, well built, 3-4 quart container for boiling water for cocoa, making coffee with a a one-cup Melita drip coffee cone, reconstituting instant oatmeal, and for easily adding hot water to our camp showers. The Graniteware coffee boiler was exactly what we needed. We fill it, use what we need for breakfast, then turn it off and set it aside. Later, especially if the day is cloudy or the solar shower water has cooled later in the evening, we'll add some more water, reheat, then add the hot water to our solar showers. We split it between two 2.5 gallon solar showers. The Graniteware Coffee Boiler was exactly what we needed and we've had absolutely no problems. Be sure to use a hot glove or pad when pouring if you just took it off the fire or the stove.

4.0 out of 5 stars your average coffee/water boiler, October 13, 2011

This review is from: Graniteware 3 Quart Coffee Boiler (Kitchen)
I was a little disappointed because it DOES NOT HAVE THE CENTER INSERT.

It is very sturdy and easy to clean. We have used it a few times camping and before we us it we put a little dish soap on the outside so when it gets a black it washes right off when you cleaning it. Also to make coffee my husband put halfed egg shells in the pot after he boiled the coffee. all the grounds settled into the egg shells!

So over all it was not everything i thought it would be, but it works great!

An indespensible source for hot water when camping. With no hot water faucet, this is used all day long. I would not be without one.
