From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 3AThis story in which a young female protagonist dances with joy when her grandmother comes to visit is told in a Caribbean-English dialect. Phonetic spellings allow readers unfamiliar with its sound to approximate a Caribbean accent while reading the story aloud. However, despite a promising start with enjoyable rhythmic repetition, the rhythm of the text soon fizzles out. In the end, most of the narrative is just a description of Grannie's clothes, perfume, and hair, with little action to hold children's interest. Brightly colored scenes of beaches, native animals, and the family members add to the Caribbean ambiance of this additional purchase.ADenise E. Agosto, formerly at Midland County Public Library, TX
