an Acoustic Pop Joy!, May 7, 2000

If you must own one Ben Lee CD, this is it. Simple, yet powerful, accoustic pop numbers that showcase young Ben Lee's musical talents is simply a joy to listen to. The simply orchestrated accoustic arrangements coupled with Ben Lee's tales of love and songwriting are wonderful. Well, Ben just wanted to let you know that this one certainly "does not suck big time" and your talent "isn't clown". Actually quite the opposite, this is a must own for those who enjoy good pop and simple, but powerful, accoustic numbers. You'll have a lot to pick from on this one...standouts include the power pop accoustic numbers...Pop Queen, How Can That Be?, and Away With The Pixies. You know you have a great CD when five years later it still finds plenty of air time from your collection.

A timeless masterpiece, July 14, 1999

This album, recorded on Mr Lee's winter holidays kicks of with the song "pop queen" which appeared in acoustic form on the ep he released with his band, noise addict. Considering that this version contains electric guitar, bass and drums its probably more noise addict than ben lee. After this gem of a song ben lee fires through "how can that be?" "sprawl" "I'm with the star" and "Don't Leave". Each of these songs leave you in awe with there quiet yet intense feel not at all unlike the Velvet Underground on the 3rd album blended with an acoustic Pavement. After these 5 openers the album reaches its first high point, Away with the Pixies a breezy beautiful song an instant classic. After speed pop of bolt, the and the melacholy narrative Side View Side 1 closes with the power pop Song 4 You. Side 2 recorded mainly in sydney starts with the second high point of the album Trying To Sneeze intense and abstract. The rest of the album meanders between raw unfinished pop songs and signs of what future recordings would bring. Highlights "Loft" "Ductile" "My Guitar" and "Get Your Sleep". The main themes of this album are love and lost love. The result is an warm album that is always current. Unlike many people ben lee doesn't try and be too wordy or to tough. He song are bound with intensity and honesty, perhaps what Dylan would have sounded like with a sense of melody. Anyone who owns any of Mr Lee's more recent recordings owes themself to check out Grandpaw and be pleasantly suprised. A timeless album by a genius in the making

A great find, May 24, 2001

What a lucky find. Great music. I lost the liner notes, but I am pretty sure that is Liz Phair singing backup on Away With The Pixies. Take a chance, I think you will really like this record - a tinge of pop, a tinge of alt. Really actually quite good.
