Book Description

April 1, 2010
Beautifully-produced and laden with gorgeous full page images, a compendium of mouth-watering recipes that pay tribute to a disappearing era

At 95 years old, the lovely Dulcie May Booker shares her 76 best recipes and cooking tips in this handsome volume peppered with reminiscences and photographs of her life as dressmaker, market gardener, and homemaker extraordinaire. Compiled by Dulcie's granddaughter, talented "foodie" Natalie Oldfield, this cookbook will satisfy the current interest in traditional cookery in a personal way, by focusing on one woman's authentic, tried-and-true versions of everyone's favorite dishes. Many will be able to identify with Dulcie's story of a life filled with "labors of love" and sustained by land and sea—or recognize it as similar to that of their own "Gran." Containing easy-to-follow instructions on how to make Dulcie's excellent, classic fare—from hearty fisherman breakfasts to dance supper dainties, as well as Dulcie’s secrets to award winning baking, cooking, and preserves—Gran's Kitchen is practical nostalgia. Continuing the home cooks' tradition of sharing recipes with each other, tucked in with Dulcie's recipes are favorites from family and friends, some old, some new.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"...the type of ode we'd pay to our grandma if we were writing a cookbook....a book overflowing with colorful photographs of food and family. There are quick fries, sweets, savory pies, pasties, quick breads and more. Instructions are simple and straightforward, the ingredient are in weights and not measures (grams and ounces versus cups). The variety and simplicity of the recipes would make this a perfect gift for a mom who wants to share with a young daughter the joys of baking and cooking." ~McClatchy Tribune

This book is amazing. If you enjoy cookbooks with a history this one is for you. I absoloutely love this book. I can't wait to make the breads and sweets and main course dinners in this wonderful book. The book itself is beautiful and worth every penny. Simply put together with love and stories that will warm your heart, beautiful pictures of almost every recipe and you'll feel as though you knew Miss Dulcie May Booker as she makes you feel like
family. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice and comforting recipe book January 28, 2012

Gran's Kitchen is a very lovely cook book, and well biased towards sweet delights. There are a number of savoury recipes as well, but I would think this cookbook would be complete as a sweets and snacks collection. Most if not all of the recipes are from base ingredients, and the beautiful photographs and design of the recipes makes cooking with them a real pleasure. It's a beautiful book to have on the shelf and leaf through, and has nice recipes which are easy to make, using more-or-less everyday ingredients. Would makea great gift.

4.0 out of 5 stars The old favorites April 7, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Brought the book after seeing it on master chef. Yet to take any of the recipes for a test drive but that will happen, certainly plenty of kiwi traditions in here, I remember many of these being served by my own grandmother over the years. The only disappointment in the kindle version is the sponge recipe, which appears to lack the measurement of a key ingredient from the list, but I'm sure a little research will enable me to work that one out. Lovely book with sweet reminesence of times gone by (it was the mans job to wring the chickens neck and the women's to pluck and gut it).... How times have changed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely nostalgic cookbook February 20, 2013

Read about this cookbook online and I was enchanted. Very difficult to get this book in the USA as it is an import. But, then again, Amazon came through with a third party seller. Book was in excellent, new condition and loved the beautiful black and white photos and retro recipes. This cookbook is not for everyone but happily, I loved it.
