Uneven but essential,

This is an underrated little gem of a book, especially for those with an interest in Grant. John Eaton knew USG in 1863 and had the unique ability of writing well about him, illuminating personal features not found elsewhere. My favorite scene is when Eaton hears rumors that Grant is hitting the bottle again. He goes out to Grant's hotel room to check out whether the whispers are true. There he finds Julia, Grant's much-adored wife, applying hot towels to the General's head and fussing over him. Why? Because he was suffering from a migraine, and one brought on by stress, not bourbon.Eaton also includes some interesting commentary on Grant's irascible, unpleasant father. His insights into Grant's psyche make this worth your while. For anyone with an interest in Grant or the Freedmen, this is excellent source material. |
