First off I'll start by saying I picked up this book during a promo giveaway and it was definitely worth the read. I would really rate this book 3.5 stars but I round up since that isn't an option here. As a warning I will try to keep this review mostly spoiler free but there may be a few small things that sneak in here.

I'll start with what I liked and mostly that would be the wonderful quality of writing. The characters are very well fleshed out and even the minor characters are surprisingly detailed and you really get to know Talie and Alex and their world. I thought the dialogue stayed true to real life and was pretty believable for the most part. The story it's self is refreshing in that not to many YA titles have gone the genie route or wish givers as they are called here. I was slightly disappointed that more of the wish giver mythology wasn't explored but seeing as this is going to be a trilogy I would guess that is being saved for another book. We do get a few peaked into a much broader back story, one that I wish had been further explored here.

Onto the bad although there isn't much. This first book is very focused on building the relationship between Talie and Alex but unfortunately that's all there is for the entire middle of the book and without any real conflict it seemed to drag on far too long. The introduction of any real enemy happens very late in the book and there isn't as much character building as there could have been had they been introduced earlier. The climax of the book results in a du ex machina that comes out of no where and is a bit of a let down.

The main character's personality was realistically written as a teenage girl but this book suffered horribly from a lack of editing. There were too many parts that I was frustrated at the author's writing that I finished the book in a state of anger. There are parts that the main character's actions did not make sense and there are a lot times that the "rules" set up by the author are paradoxed often in what the author chooses to do with the characters.

Remember E. Nesbit: The Railway Children, Five Children and It, The Phoenix and the Carpet? Wishes are not so simple - they lead quickly into a quagmire of ethical dilemmas. Corrien Killmer has updated this story premise in a promising new young-adult novel, Granted. Her story arc has much greater intensity and sophistication than I expected from a "teen novel" - the progression surprised me. It opened a window for me, as an older adult, into refreshingly realistic conversations among the main characters, whose friendships support them as they grow together. It was an engaging read. I'm left with a keen curiosity about the back-story and where these young people go next. I have my suspicions ... it is time for the sequel, which I hope comes soon.

Yes, I'm in my 40's but, I really do enjoy young adult fiction! I love the creativity and unique nature of this story. Fresh and new - I've not read anything like it! Following Talie(Natalie) through her struggles, disappointments, heartaches and joys really makes you feel connected to her. Alexander - well, you'll have to read the book. I thoroughly enjoyed the read. Well done! I am anxious for the second book!

Granted is such a great book! I couldn't stop turning pages. Can't wait to see what Corrien Killmer has in store for Talie and Alex. I'm [im]patiently waiting for Haunted to be available to purchase so I can see what's next...

A new take on the "genie" theme. Cleverly written with many twists and turns. An enjoyable read for young and old alike.

This book was stunning. Honestly, time and again, stunning. Brought me right back to the fun parts of my teenage years. I couldn't put it down! It wrecked my sleep, it's all I did on my breaks at work... It opened up the daydreamer in me.

This is an easy, fast read that you won't be able to put down! At the beginning of the book, I thought I might know where the storyline was going, but refreshingly I was wrong. Lots of plot twists will keep you interested the entire book. Seriously - when does the next book come out???
