Book Description

March 14, 1994 Granville Barker Plays (Book 2)
No one in Barker's generation did more to change British Theatre

The Marrying of Ann Leete, is thinly veiled costume drama, using an 18th century tale to reflect on 19th century reality, it follows the story of Ann a "new woman", surrounded by a society of manoeuvres and lies; The Madras House follows the fortunes of the Madras family at the height of Edwardian expansion of London and the reformation of ideas about society and gender roles; His Majesty is the fictional story of the king of a cash-strapped Eastern European country where naive make-believe meets the dark universe of realpolitik; Farewell to the Theatre is a witty commentary on the trials and tribulations of a theatre and its actors.

This review is from: Granville-Barker Plays: 2: Marrying of Ann Leete , Madras House , His Majesty , Farewell to the Theatre (v. 2) (Paperback)
If you're learning about Harley Granville-Barker or are already a fan, this series of his plays is the only one with his updated versions of his plays, written from 20 to 30 years after his original versions. The revised versions are revelatory, and are included in this volume and Volume I. This man rivaled Bernard Shaw, and was a friend and contemporary of his. In some ways he surpassed him, though he was not as prolific. Just stunning theatre.
