Book Description

July 1, 2006
Will even one of these sisters emerge from the war with a victory of the heart? The five beautiful Granville sisters ? Rosie, Juliet, Louise, Amanda and Charlotte ? enjoy a life of aristocratic privilege in the 1930s in Mayfair. Rosie and Juliet are deadly rivals and when Rosie falls in love with a marquess, Juliet steals him from her, only to dump him later. Juliet goes on to marry the wealthy Duke of Kincardine, but when he turns out to be homosexual, only interested in being given an heir, she leaves him. When World War II is declared, the love lives of the Granville girls are struck a fatal blow. The man Rosie went on to marry is killed during the Blitz. Then Lousie falls in love with Jack, a sixteen-year-old evacuee from the slums of London. When she falls pregnant, the family is devastated and she is sent to Wales in disgrace. Amanda has turned out to be left-wing, despising everything the Granvilles stand for. The girls? mother, Liza, is distraught that all her plans for her daughters have gone wrong. She can only pin her hopes on Charlotte now . . .

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Rosie and Juliet Granville are the two eldest of the five notorious Granville sisters, who were real-life It girls in 1930s London society. Rosie is pretty and sweet, but she's no match for younger sister Juliet, who's a real stunner determined to ignore convention. Rosie finds the man of her dreams, only to have him stolen by Juliet. Not to be deterred in her quest, Rosie eventually settles for marriage to a "next best alternative." Juliet, on the other hand, plays the field before settling down, and to her parents' horror, her risque behavior earns her a place in the gossip columns. As the first clouds of World War II gather, both girls, still wildly jealous of one another, struggle to find happiness and fulfillment in a society with a rigid moral code that the war will drastically alter. Parker writes vividly of the social customs of the time, and her characters are rich, varied, and intriguing. An appealing historical romance with an open-ended conclusion that promises more to come. 4.0 out of 5 stars Great Start To A Three-Part Series...4 1/2 Stars, August 15, 2007
This review is from: The Granville Sisters (Hardcover)
I wasn't very sure about this series...it takes place in England, and I normally NEVER read books that take place outside the U.S., but it's set during WWII, and is a family saga, so I figured I'd give it a shot. SOOOOOO glad I did!

The story focuses on the two oldest of the five privileged Granville sisters. Rosie and Juliet are coming out as debutantes at the same time (1935) and Rosie is NOT happy about sharing the spotlight with her one-year younger, sensual and sexy sister. And, just as Rosie predicted, Juliet absolutely outshines the more practical and reserved Rosie.

Overall, the story is very entertaining, and VERY difficult to put down. There are scandals, tragedies, and always in the background is the constant threat of war with Germany. My only complaint (and it really couldn't be helped, as it's an important part of the book) is just how incredibly shallow and ignorant Liza Granville (the girls mother) is. She only cares about where and when the next dinner party is, and making sure her and the girls all have new dresses for the occasion.

But that little thing aside, this is a great story. I've already started on The Granville Affair, book two in this series, and am definitely looking forward to seeing how this family's saga plays out. If you're interested in this type book...i.e. war, drama, family saga...then I absolutely recommend you give this series a try!
