This review is from: Grape & the Grain (Audio CD)
After greatly enjoying Brian Eno's sublime new album Small Craft, I wanted to check out one of Eno's two collaborators on the recordings, guitarist Leo Abrahams. (I was already familiar with the other, composer and electronic musician Jon Hopkins. His album Insides is quite good.) I decided to start with Abrahams' most recent release, the Grape and the Grain. Comprised of eleven guitar instrumentals with varying amounts of accompaniment, G&G is always nice to listen to. Sometimes it rises above the level of merely pleasant and offers up a complex and intriguing piece of music such as the striking "Spring Snow." Many of the other themes, including the pastoral "Come Morning" and the contemplative "Blind," sound a bit like Windham Hill music, but for me that's a good thing.
