5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!!
This book is the essence of graphic design. It is a must for any design student. The book itself makes one of the strongest visual statements that I've seen in any Design text. It's great for both the experienced designer and those who aren't accustomed to the nuance that so many overlook. The best parts of the book are the exercises. With problems that are enjoyable...

3.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive look at graphic design and advertising
This book was for a advanced graphic design production class I took. Overall the book was very comprehensive covering a wide range of topics for graphic design and advertising. However, due to the vast amount of info each topic was only touched on, nothing too in depth. There are however many reference materials the author suggests throughout the book and in the back. For...

It's great for both the experienced designer and those who aren't accustomed to the nuance that so many overlook. The best parts of the book are the exercises. With problems that are enjoyable and challenging, Ms. Landa has created something that Professors around the globe should take notice to. This is the bible for graphic design students and is a great improvement over the first edition (which was great in and of itself).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great resource for begining Designer, July 21, 2004
By
I am a design student, and this was our textbook for one of my design foundation classes. The projects that we did in class (and are now in my portfolio) were modified versions of some of the exercises in this book.

This book starts with the basics of 2D design and then builds on what you have learned. It is a great overview of other areas of design as well. This is a hands on book that allows you to learn by doing.

If you are interested in graphic design go get this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thorough and engaging, August 11, 2005

This review is from: Graphic Design Solutions, Third Edition (Paperback)
This book is used as a course text in many design classes across the country. I can see why. Not so much a history as it is a survey of the current state of graphic design, it's quite possibly the best treatment I've ever read on the subject in a single volume. The 3rd edition is significantly expanded in content and reformatted versus the 2nd, and the illustrative examples are abundant and well-chosen. Many of the examples are accompanied by remarks from the designers themselves, which helps shed light on the concepts and thought processes behind the work. The text strikes a good balance between commentary and pedagogy, and as a result the book works for both instructional reference and casual reading. The end of each chapter contains related exercises designed to prod your right brain into action. This book will help you discover -- or rediscover -- what's fun and exciting about graphic design.

5.0 out of 5 stars the best out there!, September 21, 2000

this is the very best graphic design and advertising text on the market. The advertising chapter and branding chapter are worth the price alone! The examples and ideas are brilliant.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thorough and succinct ground for graphic designers., January 8, 1999
By A Customer
There are a ton of graphic design texts out there however this one is significant. It's perfectly clear, logical, and progressive organization and content make GDS the text I've searched for to reinforce my teaching. Creative exercises and problems, good illustrations (wish it had been printed on better paper) and precise in explanation. Excellent critique guide. This book proves there is a skill set in graphic design that is truly necessary to set the foundation for innovative and creative work. It's a book that has staying power long after its initial use. Professionals can use it to review and refresh their visual thinking. Finally, someone has outlined the basics in a clear manner with excellent projects to accompany the principles described.

4.0 out of 5 stars I sold this book in college for beer money..., August 13, 1998
By A Customer
I sold this book in college for beer money, and I'm kicking myself for it now. I NEED it. I took graphics from Donna Hajash at Texas A&M in early '97, and this skinny, slick black and photo-filled tome was our text. Lots of my fellow students didn't read it, and neither did I for quite some time, but then I realized how foolish I was... it's not profoundly academic -- it's basic, but it gives you a great headfirst splashdown into the world of graphic design, the lingo, the concepts, examples, exercises, without the insult of opinion and dated trends. It tells you just enough to get you started and lets you trust your own instincts from there. Now that I'm out of school and taking the proverbial job-hunting months required for all journalism grads, I find that the lack of this book in my life is something I regret more than the hangover the proceeds of its untimely sale provided...

Ms. Landa has done a terrific job once again. This book helps you to find different solutions to design problems you probably would'nt think of initially. In addition I'm proud to say I am a student of hers, and her classes are just as engaging.
