I recommend this publication for all Graphic Artist/Designers. I also use this book as as a teaching aid for my graphic design students. Very educational and the historical data is so simple but yet detail.

I got the softcover version of this book and have paged through parts of it. The case studies are interesting and perhaps inspirational, but the content is secondary here because -- and this is the only reason I'm writing this review -- THE TYPE IS TOO SMALL!!! Now as a 28-year-old designer with average vision, who loves small type and good design as much as anyone, I know what it feels like to have a client ruin a perfectly good design by saying they can't read 10 pt type. But this book's type is really too tiny to be functional. The effort of reading gets in the way of enjoyment. I recommend holding the book about six inches away in very bright light. If you buy this book, get the hardcover version; apparently it's larger-sized.

Design Trumps Function?,
By Fishychips (San Francisco, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Graphic Design That Works: Secrets for Successful Logo, Magazine, Brochure, Promotion, and Identity Design (Paperback)
For a design book, it would be fabulous except for the fact that you need a magnifying glass in order to read it (what appears to be 5pt type set in gray). For this reason, when design and layout of the book negates the purpose (function) of the book, it is rendered useless. Rockport is well known for its beautiful graphic design books, but I have noticed several of their other titles also designed this way. Sorry I bought it, sold it for a loss.

Almost unreadable,

Most of the type in this book has been done using a size 6 Font which as far as I am concerned makes it practically unreadable. The content may be great, but I can't tell as I refuse to ruin my eyes trying to read type this small. It remainds me of the disclaimers that advertisers use at the bottom so you can't read them. Unless you absolutely must have this book, I would strongly advise finding another one

This is a good reference book for new designers, and does have a lot of valuable information. I purchased this book as an idea reference book and it wasn't as useful as I had hoped. Most of the book was information on how to create successful logos, etc. Since I have been a graphic designer for some time this wasn't what I was looking for, but I would recommend it to a new designer. I ended up returning this book and getting "The Big Book of Design Ideas 3" by Davide E. Carter instead, and have been very happy.

Gives a fresh new look at add placement in print media along with logo development. There are a lot of ideas in this book utilizing innovative design from brochures, magazines, and powerful marketing tools. Shows conceptual designs and rough drafts to the finished product. Use of photos in bold ways. You can't have too many of these books laying around to spark new ideas. A must have for a graphic designers library.

I love books from Rockport as they are always concise, informative and well illustrated, and the most affordable design books I've come across. I regularly refer to this book for devine inspiration to clear the brain fog I sometimes get when developing ideas - especially late at night :-)

If you are looking for a book that you can read, study and learn from, keep looking. The type in this book is so unbelieveably small as to make it practically unreadable. If you thought that the old "Small print at the bottom of the page" was small, you should see this book. My advice, avoid it like the Plauge!
