Editorial Reviews

Review

...an exquisite balance between mathematical predetermination and personal aesthetics, computational force and natural grace -- IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications

In the hands of artists...Mathematica has become a springboard to a new world of illustrative power -- Communication Arts

The art of Graphica will sometimes look like the creations of a human artist and sometimes like a familiar system in nature.... So, as with all mathematical art, what is presented here is a combination of the fundamental beauty of mathematical principles and the imagination of the artists -- Computer Shopper UK

The books are an excellent reference work for designers, artists, and architects--as well as people working in computer graphics, scientific visualization, and web page design -- R&D Magazine

Who says art and science don't mix? Two physicists--Michael Trott from Germany and Russian Igor Bakshee--have proven otherwise. They used Mathematica, a visualization and modeling tool used by engineers, mathematicians, and scientists, to create startling images that are at once amazingly complex and beautifully simple -- Applied Arts

From the Author

This book originated from my search for a general formula for creating beauty from randomness--a transformation perhaps more appropriate for alchemy than algorithm. On a more pragmatic level, I have also searched for ways to generate beautiful images using the computer, and--more pragmatic still--for an algorithmic means to generate attractive patterns and designs en masse, thereby proving a human designer with an inexhaustible source of inspiration.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as Graphica (1), October 30, 2006

This review is from: Graphica 2: The Pattern of Beauty: The Art of Igor Bakshee (Hardcover)
This book is the visual exploration produced under Mathematica, a very powerful mathematics program. This book is not as visually stunning as Graphica (the first book in the series), although it is pleasant enough. Many of the graphics are repeated fields, and are not that interesting.

You will do better with the first book, Graphica, which is more visually and mathematically compelling.
