About the Author

John Hornsby- When John Hornsby enrolled as an undergraduate at Louisiana State University, he was uncertain whether he wanted to study mathematics, education, or journalism. His ultimate decision was to become a teacher, but after twenty-five years of teaching at the high school and university levels and fifteen years of writing mathematics textbooks, all three of his goals have been realized; his love for teaching and for mathematics is evident in his passion for working with students and fellow teachers as well. His specific professional interests are recreational mathematics, mathematics history, and incorporating graphing calculators into the curriculum.

John's personal life is busy as he devotes time to his family (wife Gwen, and sons Chris, Jack, and Josh). He has been a rabid baseball fan all of his life. John's other hobbies include numismatics (the study of coins) and record collecting. He loves the music of the 1960s and has an extensive collection of the recorded works of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

Marge Lial has always been interested in math; it was her favorite subject in the first grade! Marge's intense desire to educate both her students and herself has inspired the writing of numerous best-selling textbooks. Marge, who received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from California State University at Sacramento, is now affiliated with American River College.

Marge is an avid reader and traveler. Her travel experiences often find their way into her books as applications, exercise sets, and feature sets. She is particularly interested in archeology. Trips to various digs and ruin sites have produced some fascinating problems for her textbooks involving such topics as the building of Mayan pyramids and the acoustics of ancient ball courts in the Yucatan.

Gary Rockswold- Dr. Gary Rockswold has been teaching mathematics for 33 years at all levels from seventh grade to graduate school, including junior high and high school students, talented youth, vocational, undergraduate, and graduate students, and adult education classes. He is currently employed at Minnesota State University, Mankato, where he is a full professor of mathematics. He graduated with majors in mathematics and physics from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He received his Ph.D. in applied mathematics from Iowa State University. He has an interdisciplinary background and has also taught physical science, astronomy, and computer science. Outside of mathematics, he enjoys spending time with his lovely wife and two children.

More About the Author

John Hornsby is a native of New Roads, Louisiana and a lifetime resident of the Pelican State. He has lived a dream, loving his profession of mathematics education since the day he decided to become a teacher as a freshman at Louisiana State University in 1967. After graduating from L.S.U. and Southeastern Louisiana University, he spent 23 years teaching in Louisiana high schools and the University of New Orleans. In 1997 he decided to devote his efforts to full-time authoring of college and university textbooks. He is eternally grateful to Marge Lial, who gave him the opportunity to join her in her series of successful textbooks. His first book was published in 1990, and has coauthored over 100 editions of textbooks ranging from beginning algebra through precalculus. His current publisher is Pearson Education.

John's professional interests include the history of mathematics, incorporating graphing calculators into the precalculus curriculum, and sharing the beauty of mathematics through his series of talks, "Math Class Goes to Hollywood." These talks include scenes from movies and television that provide mathematics-education moments. Some are good, some are bad, and some are really ugly, but they all provide an opportunity to learn about mathematics.

His lifelong love affair with mathematics authoring and teaching has inspired his personalized Louisiana automobile license plates, which read "MATHBKS" and "ALGEBRA". And whenever he has the opportunity, he tells students what the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics coined some years back: Do Math, and You Can Do Anything.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Math Texts, November 29, 1999
By
Pamela Chernovetz (Hamden, Connecticut) - See all my reviews
I own four text books by Hornsby and Lial. Their books have been the colleges choice for two courses I've taken and my choice as a reference and backup to the other courses I've had. I wouldn't be without them. When a topic was unclear in my college text, I could refer to their presentation and always gain a better understanding of the subject. I totally disagree with the reader from Florida regarding graphing calculators. I own two, a TI-82 and a TI-86, and had no experience prior to taking a particular course. The instructor was able to guide and teach all that was needed for the course without loss of material to be covered. The engineer from Florida needs to take a closer look at his students. Most of these people have been mastering electronic games and equipment from a very early age. I doubt that they would find plain 'ole graph paper and a pencil more stimulating and interesting. I'm a 52 year old grandmother and I sure don't. Hornsy and Lial get my vote everytime and thanks to on-line ordering, I'm only s few days away from receiving the best they have to offer.

As a Mathematics major, I have been subjected to the good, the bad & the ugly when it comes to textbooks. Of my mathematics texts, Hornsby & Lial definitely rise above the pack.
