Book Description

April 2000
Despite grappa's favored place today in even the most exclusive bars, its origins are humble. It was created primarily to avoid wasting the pomace -- the skins, pips, stems, and pulp left over from the winemaking process. The pomace was then distilled, creating a clear brandy often considered too fiery and inelegant for sophisticated palates. But as vintners began to craft world-class wines out of grapes and regions once thought unsophisticated, and as boutique bourbons and single-malt Scotches became trendy, grappa too was ready for a revival.

A brief history of this distillate is followed by a discussion of what distinguishes it from other pomace brandies made in Italy and elsewhere. High-quality brands are now often handcrafted by a select few vintners and distillers, and the authors explain each step of making grappa, from the harvest to the aging, bottling, and production. The heart of this handsome volume consists of two A to Z guides: one of the vintners, who tend to be smaller producers; and the other of the distillers, most of whom produce in greater quantities. A brief overview of the history, methods, equipment, and grapes is supplied for each producer, and the tasting notes that follow are both informative and evocative.

Grappa is a guide to finding pleasure in a drink whose essence has often been obscured by snobbery. With a well-conceived introduction and a thoughtful, straightforward catalog of producers, this book should prove an essential reference for newcomers and for connoisseurs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Colorful introduction to grappa that's light on comparisons, June 22, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Grappa: A Guide to the Best (Hardcover)
This overview of grappa is nicely packaged -- many color photos of bottles, distilleries, and vineyards; quality paper and binding; built-in ribbon bookmark, etc. The bulk of this book consists of two- or three-page write-ups of distilleries or vintners and a few of their more interesting grappas.

Given the competition, or relative lack thereof, this is a book with few peers. However, there's also room for improvement. As of summer '04, he information in this book is just starting to show its age. There's a great variety of vintners and distillers, but it's also incomplete on many of their individual offerings.

And while there are good descriptions of grappas with plenty of adjectives, the authors do little to take a stand and guide the reader to one specific grappa or another. This is critical for someone overwhelmed with so many choices. This book would excel if only the authors tried to rate different grappas -- or even just compare a few or point out a few distinguishing selections.

But at least for now, it's one of the best references out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Guide to Grappa, November 6, 2001

This review is from: Grappa: A Guide to the Best (Hardcover)
There is almost as much variety in Grappa as there
is variety in wine, and there are almost as many types.
Especially with the recent upsurge in popularity the
fortunate buyer is faced with difficult choices.

This book gives excellent coverage of the many
traditional sources, and helps one find one's way
through the myriad of possibilities without having
to resort to the "buy one of each and try it"
technique.

An excellent gift for your friends
who appreciate good Grappa!

an exciting introduction to a group of beverages that I think are little known to many. This book is best when paired with a restaurant that has a nice selection of these interesting beverages and people knowledgable about them. The book has many wonderful color photos and makes a very nice gift to special friends.
