Book Description

May 16, 1983

There is nothing like a Greatful Dead concert!

Since 1965, there have been over 3,000 Greatful Dead concerts, from the Panhandle of Golden Gate Park to the Gizeh Pyramids. At each of them, someone has stepped "on the bus" and become a Dead Head.

Now, all of the Dead Head voices and visions have come together. Greatful Dead: The Official Book of the Dead Heads is a splendid mixture of musicians, dancers and costumed participants -- a portrait of a singulau band and its remarkable following. It is a ticket to a Dead concert and an invitation to join in the celebration.

If you've ever experienced the greatful Dead at their best -- or if you've always wondered what they are all about -- open this book and see what happens. You may find yourself in complete agreement: There is nothing like a Greatful Dead concert.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent collage of nostalgia of the greatest band ever!, May 1, 2000

This review is from: Grateful Dead (Paperback)
I was shocked when I saw that no one has reviewed this book, yet. This book has various photos and interviews taken at concers and gatherings spanning from the Haight Ashbury days to the early 80s. Also, lots of quotes from the performers were written, about the situations of the various times of their touring. At the end, the COMPLETE tour list from 1961(pre Dead) all the way to 1982, was thouroughly written. That includes the Acid Tests,Woodstock, Monterey Pop, and the venues that they played. This may be oriented to Deadheads themselves, but this is surely a collector's item. Since this book was written in 1982, it may go out of print again at any time. Definately a collector's item!

4.0 out of 5 stars A must have, May 8, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Grateful Dead (Paperback)
Being a verteran of many shows, it brought you the flavor of a dead show. Has letters from Heads and great concert pics. I bought this years ago and use it to hold my concert stubs. It is beaten and worn from use. Not informative, but if you ever shed a tear when you heard "To Lay Me Down" then this will bring you back.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Official Book Of The DEADHEADS, December 11, 2011

Dark Star-The Other One (The Bus To Never Ever Land) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Grateful Dead (Paperback)
Back when this book was first released, there had only been two books dealing with the Dead and they were both long out of print. The nice thing about this book is that it really is put together from a fan's perspective with press clippings, newspaper reviews, tons of fan letters, some of which deal with meeting band members, mixed in with some great photos. For example, there's clipping of a newspaper review of the show at The Spectrum in Philadelphia on 5-2-81 and after reading it way back when, I had to get the tape. Want to know what cow dancing is? Well, it's in here. There's a nice story about a couple of people who's dog passed away shortly before the 7-7-81 show to which they attended only to hear a sweet To Lay Me Down. Rather than draw on one or two experiences, this book draws on many different sources from across Deadhead Land which give it a nice all inclusive feel. The back of the book has all the known shows at the time of the books printing listed. No set lists though. There are fun insights into the fans, the band and even tape collectors with make this book a fun read and a must have for people interested in that sort of thing.
