-Spirituality and Practice

"This book is a thoroughly modern book of blessings, both heartfelt and deeply profound, filled with fresh voices and contemporary expressions of thankfulness."
-New Thought Magazine

"This is a fantastic book, beautiful in its simplicity, which will enrich your life and your bookshelf. Why not start being more thankful tonight?"

-The Magical Buffet

"Get a copy of this book if you're looking to experience gratitude in your life."
-Dominique's Desk

"The Grateful Table gives families something to share and reflect on before each meal over the course of a year. Starting from January straight through New Year's Eve in December, some are shorter messages with just a line or two, while others lean towards a paragraph. Many are not traditional prayers, but more of a reminder of things to be grateful for, and optimistic thoughts."
-Confessions of a Psychotic Housewife

"There are prayers from the 18th-century for Thanksgiving to devotionals from world's wisdom traditions and sincere expressions of thankfulness by Alton Brown, David Foster Wallace, Sheryl Crow and many others. The Grateful Table shows us the way to begin every meal with an open heart."
-Andersons Angels

"I would consider this a devotional for the daily meal, but also for daily life. My favorite quote is short and to the point [...] This small hardcover book is just begging to be opened, read cover to cover, and to give you grateful inspiration."
-Networking Witches

"Don't have time to sit down to a meal every day? Worry not. You can offer any one of these blessings at any time of day that you have a minute or so to think about how lucky you are and want to glow in the light of it."
-Examiner.com

"This contemporary book of blessings is segmented into daily reflections, offering you the choice of using it as a daily affirmation guide, a daily journal prompt or to absorb fully chapter by chapter for a mega-dose of inspiration. Each day offers a new perspective and a new way to give thanks, leaving room for your own personal thoughts and words of gratitude."
-Rural Mom

"How lovely to see through Brenda's offering that gratitude is the wonderful feeling we can have all year long."
-Love Letters Live

"This book will not only be an inspiration to you, but will be a catalyst to compiling your own thoughts on how good your own life is and sharing those blessing with others."
-Book Bargains and Reviews

"A sweet little book full of inspirational 'blessings, prayers, and graces for the daily meal.'"
-Eco Child's Play

"From the Old Testament (This is the day the Lord has made...) to Kanye West (Show some gratitude, leave the attitude at home), this collection of thankful thoughts covers all 365 days of the year. Intended to be used for practicing gratitude in community before meals, the diverse philosophical perspectives also make them perfect for daily gratitude meditation. Giving thanks is not only becoming a popular mainstream spiritual practice, it has also been taken up by those working with universal law to attract abundance. Brenda Knight reminds readers of The Grateful Table that giving is an important part of gratitude practice. Part of the proceeds from this terrific little book will go to BOSS, Building Opportunities for Self-Sufficiency, a California network offering housing and support services."
-Retailing Insight Magazine

"Give thanks for a little and you will find a lot," is the January blessing by the Hausa of Nigeria in the book The Grateful Table: Blessing, Prayers and Graces for the Daily Meal by Brenda Knight and Nina Lesowitz. In this book of daily blessings we find a lot to give thanks for. We are reminded that grace is not just for the dinner table. It is an exercise in gratitude, a Thanks Giving that can infuse our meals and our days with appreciation. This beautiful book is in itself a blessing that will uplift and inspire you to connect to the grace threading through your life."
-Polly Campbell, author of Imperfect Spirituality: Extraordinary Enlightenment for Ordinary People

"My grandparents taught me an old French-Canadian proverb: Anyone who doesn't expression their gratitude for all their gifts on a daily basis is a thief. Brenda Knight's new collection reinforces these notions of gratitude, gifts and daily practice. Keep it on the table of your choice and refer to it whenever you are tempted to think you've accomplished everything on your own."
- Phil Cousineau, author of Burning the Midnight Oil, The Painted Word, and The Art of Pilgrimage

"Gratitude is at the center of The Code and sharing a meal with friends and loved ones happens at every single gathering of the Intenders of the Highest Good. Here, fellow Intender Brenda Knight has gathered 365 ways to express thanks to all we are given in this life. The Grateful Table is a wonderful tool for manifesting and sharing abundance."
-Tony Burroughs, author of and Get What You Want

"The Grateful Table brings together heartfelt prayers and homilies from a truly diverse group of writers, artists, and visionaries. This is a gracious and unique book that offers a bite-size reflection for every day of the year."
-Billee Sharp, author of Lemons and Lavender

"A heartening collection. Worthy of quiet reflection and sharing."
-Judy Ford, author of Every Day Love

"There is nothing quite like the feeling of fellowship that we, as human beings, experience when we come together for the purpose of being thankful for our lives and the many wonderful blessings we share. Every page of The Grateful Table: Blessings, Prayers and Graces gives us the ability to experience that euphoria in a deeply profound and beautiful way."
-David Mezzapelle, author of Contagious Optimism

"If you've ever thought about starting a daily spiritual practice, but felt you just didn't have enough time then The Grateful Table: Blessings, Prayers and Graces is just for you. Since you are eating anyway, everyday, this book gives you the blessings, prayers and graces that are a perfect daily practice. And since the practice of gratitude is the foundation of a more peaceful and happy life you will nourish your body mind spirit with every meal you eat."
-Susyn Reeve, author of the bestselling The Inspired Life

"The older I get, the more I realize the importance and the power of gratitude. It can help us rise about a situation and be thankful for what we do have instead of focusing on what we don't. I love this book for giving us something to be thankful for every day of the year.not only to begin a meal but also to begin a day or a lifetime of gratitude."
-Allen Klein, Vice President, Unity of San Francisco, author of The Art of Living Joyfully
Vice president, Unity of San Francisco

" inspires, regardless of any current suffering (or joy). Its anecdotes, meditations and prayers, pulled from poets, philosophers, scientists, rabbis, preachers, buddhists, rappers, writers, politicians, composers, inventors and more helps me to understand this eternal flame of love and giving. Knight and Lesowitz lead me to a new meditation as a writer: I need to have more gracious characters in novels, a more gracious voice in poems, a more gracious retrospective in nonfiction."
-Nick Belardes, author of ,i>A People's History of the Peculiar

I saw the author Brenda Knight talk at a bookstore the other night and I was moved and motivated by her story of how gratitude turned her life around. We all need to get in touch with our humanity and share more with each other. This book of blessings is a blessing in and of itself. I will turn to it again and again when I need to get back in touch with my "attitude of gratitude."

The review originally appeared on The Magical Buffet website on 1/25/14.

People always talk about developing an “attitude of gratitude”. Around Thanksgiving people countdown what they’re thankful for on Facebook, at the Thanksgiving dinner table they recount what they’re thankful for, or at the least take a moment count their blessings. Perhaps during Christmas while making charitable donation people spare a thought of gratitude that they’re not the ones in need this holiday season. Yet I would guess that’s the extent of gratitude the average person or family shares in a year.

What if there are was a way to exercise your gratitude muscles on a daily basis? Enter “The Grateful Table: Blessing, Prayers and Graces for the Daily Meal” by Brenda Knight.

Brenda Knight is on a mission to bring more happiness, more joy, and more gratitude to people’s lives. With her book, “The Grateful Table”, each day you’ll find a different quote from a wide variety of people, ranging from Neil Gaiman to Elizabeth Edwards and Ray Bradbury to Saint Issac of Ninevah. The author hopes you’ll gather around the table and share these daily thoughts until you start to feel that gratefulness every day.

Now as you know, with all things like this, I always check out my birthday for the example to share. So May 29th is “Thank you for the reflection of Your Smile in all we see.” – Kenneth Kurtz.

Who is Kenneth Kurtz? Honestly, I’ve got no clue. I emailed a couple of publicists, they had no clue. Googled Kenneth Kurtz, got a handful of results, none of them seemed right. So dear Magical Buffet readers, if you know who Kenneth Kurtz is, let all of us know in the comments!

Until then, perhaps you should consider “The Grateful Table”. A beautiful little book to help you be thankful all year round.

Saying Grace at the dinner table never entered my family's thoughts or so it appears as I never recall a single time it was done. Once married though, my husband shared his hope I would follow his customary habit of saying thanks before eating, particularly as we planned to have a family.

Thirty nine years and two children later, it felt like our words of thanks were always the same, 'Heavenly Father, we thank you for the blessings you have given each of us, we thank you for this food and pray you will bless it to the use of our bodies and pray that you bless the hands who prepared this food. Thank you Lord. Amen.' with an occasional 'boy scout version' (ex-RAF Flyboy was also a Scoutmaster) 'Thank you God for this food, yea God!'
I imagine a bored God sighing heavily...Even the well known quote 'it is the thought that counts' didn't make me feel any better!

Christmas came and with it The Grateful Table: Blessings, Prayers and Graces for the Daily Meal!
Our thoughtful daughter must have shared my feelings as with a flourish she produced a copy of Brenda Knight's and said it was time for a change!

Filled with appreciation for life and a good dose of gratitude for others, The Grateful Table is a wonderful opportunity to spruce up thanks gone a bit stale. There is so much to be thankful in life but too often we rush through and fail to take time to give real thanks.

With this book Brenda Knight has given a new life to precious times as we gather around the table. Each prayer, blessing or quote listed for that particular day is shared by one of us during this special time as we discover new blessings proving Grace before meals is not a thing of the past!
