Having very much enjoyed the two earlier books in this series, I had to finally give up on this one, which I had been looking forward to reading. The author has moved away from any semblance of reality and given us a cardboard villain whose crimes are tied up with a video game. The whole thing was too hard to swallow. After plodding through 100 pages of this almost 700-page nonsense, I put the book down. The writing is also poorer than earlier books. Typical potboiler style with short, punchy sentences. I wonder whether this writer is being betrayed by her editors. Stick to her first two books.

There is a lot going on in this novel. the villains are as bad as you can get - and you have two of them! Mind games galore! Detective Sargent Nightingale is in for some harrowing events - some that are life-changing. You will find yourself wanting to jump into the book to save Nightingale - but you'll have to take a back seat to Dective Inspector Fenwick. You may get frustrated right along with Fenwick by the plodding style of the British police. Fenwick is no politician - he's a copper who wants to take charge and solve crimes. When it comes to trying to save Nightingale he pulls out all the stops. It's a fast paced book that will keep you turning the pages.
