Book Description

May 12, 2006
Grave History is designed as a guidebook to Citizens' Cemetery in Prescott, Arizona. You can take this book to the cemetery, walk randomly among the graves, find a name on a marker, open the book to the Grave Marker List, and most likely find some information on the person buried where you are standing. Over 840 people are listed in these pages and more than 510 include extra information not found on the marker. Using the map, walk around, get some exercise, and improve your knowledge of Prescott's pioneer history at the same time. If out-of-town friends are visiting, take them out to Citizens' with this book and introduce them to the real history of Prescott. This book also contains a collection of essays, newspaper articles, and photographs that should fascinate anyone interested in the history of the West in general, and Prescott in particular. This isn’t a complete history of Prescott, of course. Events such as the Walnut Grove Dam Disaster of 1890, the downtown steam engine explosion of 1898, and the Big Fire of 1900, are glossed over or completely ignored. I don’t mention the usual over-hyped "celebrities" associated with this town such as Buckey O’Neill or Virgil Earp because they aren't buried at Citizens'. This book is about typical life and death during Prescott's first seventy years. Some articles are sensational, others mundane, but all of them describe what people were thinking and doing in those early times. For those of you with a sensitivity for history and genealogy, interesting tidbits can be gleaned from even the most boring obituary. For the creative reader, this could be considered a book of ideas. Even if you! aren’t planning a trip to Citizens' Cemetery, you should still find Grave History thought provoking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grave History, a guidebook to Citizen's Cemetery, Prescott AZ, July 7, 2006

This review is from: Grave History: A Guidebook to Citizens' Cemetery, Prescott, Arizona (Paperback)
I found the book to be very informative and well written. I enjoyed the genealogical connections; the obituaries and the plat mat of the cemetery were very interesting and useful as were the pictures of the people residing there and their tombstones. With the Charlotte Hall Museum nearby the book will be a useful reference when doing research there. It also can be used at the state capitol museum archives in Phoenix as well.
If you want to dig up the dirt on a Prescottonian you need this book as a very useful guide going down the information highway. I think my money was well spent in purchasing this book and hope the author will do further research on other cemeteries in Arizona.
