September 1997
An intriguing investigation into cultural differences illustrates human inventiveness in terms of the way people react to death, from Madagascar, where the bereaved sometimes engage in drunken incest; to America, where we watch postmortem videos; to Africa, where many laugh and dance."

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty entertaining but not terribly informative, August 19, 1999

This review is from: Grave Matters: A Lively History of Death Around the World (Hardcover)
This book isn't a page turner, and it's not a text book either. When you finish it--if you manage to--you're not left feeling much better off. The author tries to be entertaining too hard, at the expense of the content. Still, if you're interested in only getting the barest of outlines concerning various attitudes toward death, burial customs, mythology, etc., then this is a decent read. There's a lot in here, but the author doesn't go into depth about anything, which might be good if you're a layman on the subject and just want a glimpse. If you've just got a passing curiosity on the subject and don't want to go into the nitty-gritty, this might be the book for you. It does have some interesting mythology, and some of the author's personal anecdotes are worth reading, although his opinionated writing style crowds the book. Still, not a bad book at all, and fine for someone looking for just a dab of foreign tradition regarding death.
