Book Description

July 3, 2012 An Alex Craft Novel
When the dead need to talk, Alex Craft is always ready to listen…

As a Grave Witch, Alex solves murders by raising the dead—an ability that comes at a cost, and after her last few cases, that cost is compounding. But her magic isn’t the only thing causing havoc in her life. While she’s always been on friendly terms with Death himself, things have recently become a whole lot more close and personal. Then there’s her sometime partner, agent Falin Andrews, who is under the glamour of the Winter Queen. To top everything off, her best friend has been forever changed by her time spent captive in Faerie.
But the personal takes a backseat to the professional when a string of suicides occur in Nekros City and Alex is hired to investigate. The shades have no memory of the days leading up to their brutal endings, so despite the very public apparent suicides, this is murder. But what kind of magic can overcome the human will to survive? And why do the shades lack the memory of their deaths? Searching for the answer might mean Alex won’t have a life to remember at all…

5.0 out of 5 stars An Action Packed Roller Coaster July 3, 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Alex Craft, Grave Witch extraordinaire, makes her living solving murders by raising the deceased shade. Her latest case involves an apparent suicide that she was hired to investigate. It should have been an open and shut case, but when she questioned the shade it had no memory of the events leading up to its death, something that has never happened before. When several more suicides pop up with the same circumstances, Alex realizes that these deaths weren't suicides at all but murder. But getting to the bottom of this case may just put her in the crosshairs for the killer's next target.

I really enjoy the framework of this series in that using magic comes with consequences. Alex's vision issues after raising a shade are worse than ever, to the point where it won't be much longer until she becomes fully blind. It would have been so easy to have her new found fae powers to have been a magic fix for this, but that isn't the case and I really appreciated it. In fact there was another opportunity for an easy fix in Grave Memory where Alex was basically completely healed and renewed, yet her vision issues were left alone. I just hate when power comes too easy or there are no real consequences to using such power in books. I vastly prefer there to be responsibility and consequences for power, and this series definitely hits that mark.

Alex's love life is even more complicated than ever, something I didn't think possible. Even though neither man was really a viable option for her due to the circumstances, Falin still seemed to be the more likely of the pair to stand a chance, even if I would have preferred Death to be the victor. Granted, the Winter Queen would be a major roadblock there as she refuses to relinquish her hold on him, but at least Falin doesn't disappear all the time like a certain collector. Even though Death may have said that he loves her, nothing between them could really be called a relationship as he is strictly forbidden from being with her. His constant disappearing combined with the secrecy makes things difficult to say the least, and honestly prior to reading this book, my hope for them together had really started to dwindle. After the events in Grave Memory I have a lot more faith in them, although it is a little ironic as they definitely aren't in any better of a situation than before. That being said, things did finally come to a head, and how they feel about each other is no longer in question. Although what that really means for them in the end still remains to be seen.

Considering the very large volume of books I go through per year (300+) it can be a little difficult to remember past events from a previous installment when I pick up a series' latest release. A lot of the time I have to go back and read the last chapter or so of that earlier book to refresh my memory as to what is going on and who everyone is. So, it is always a sign of a really good series when I don't have to do this refresher and can jump right in because things made enough of a lasting impact on me that I can remember what happened. The Alex Craft series is a perfect example of this as these books are so good that they really stand a step above the rest. Each installment is even better than the last, making of one heck of an entertaining series. Grave Memory is an action packed roller coaster ride that will keep you enthralled from the very start. An absolute must read!

But her magic isn't the only thing causing havoc in her life. While she's always been on friendly terms with Death himself, things have recently become a whole lot more close and personal. But what kind of magic can overcome the human will to survive? And why does the shade lack the memory of his death? Searching for the answer might mean Alex won't have a life to remember at all...

I really liked this series when it first came out. Although it reminded me a lot of early LKH (basically Alex Craft had the exact same job as Anita Blake before she went all Ardeur, raising shades of the dead and getting them to testify as to what happened or their wishes after they have departed ...AND working with the police as a consultant to solve murders) It was still fun, and well written. I loved the fact that this character had a very strong female support system, something so few of our female leads in Urban Fantasy seem to have.

I'm not a fan of a Heroine who is a self admitted slut. Call me old fashioned, but I like my heroine to be a bit of a challenge to whoever she is dealing with. While Alex as the voice of the books, spoke to the fact that was how she behaved in the past, I didn't see a lot of that in the first books, it was more referred to as seen. She had a job that was interesting, she was smart, the world building was extremly strong, and there was an interesting love triangle. What's not to like?

Well...things are changing. Alex is starting her own P.I. Agency (sigh...dear god, could we please have other jobs besides PI for our protaganists? I know it means you get to solve crimes and deal with the police without being shut out but it gets old.) Alex was also dealing with the fall out of the past books, discovering the fact that she is a powerful Fae and that her Father has been hiding things from her, her whole life and the damage Faery is wrecking extends not just to her friends, two of whom were captured and kept in Faery...one for hundreds of years, but also has put constraints on her love life but more about that later.

The mystery plot in the book is good. It is tightly written, moves right along, our protaganist is a good detective and clever. Her side characters are strongly written and feel quite real.

The problem for me with this series, and in particular in this book is Alex's inability to make a decision regarding her love life. There are two men she is attracted to. Both of them come with dire complications and problems. And there in lies my issue with what is developing with this character. She goes with and sleeps with, which ever guy is available. She tells one she loves him, and then when she can't be with him ....off she goes with the other one who she loves. If things get complicated with him...she'll bounce back to the other. I for one am getting sick of it. I like this series, I like the characters (although I'm a little irked that we are sliding right into the whole...I gain more powers with every book syndrome), but I can get past that. It seems to be occuring with all my favorite Heroes and Heroines. I've said before, I think it would be fun to see a series where a Hero starts out strong and powerful and loses abilities with every book until by the last book of the series, he/she is human.

No my real complaint is my Heroine, the person in my head...Alex Craft, who I like. I'd want her for a friend. She is smart, cunning, tough when she has to be, compassionate when she needs to be, and I almost never see her do things marking her as too stupid to live. However, she HAS to make a decision herself at some point in regards to her love life instead of just landing in bed with which ever guy is ALLOWED to sleep with her by the forces that run their lives. I like Alex alot, but
I'm really starting to lose respect for her and that bothers me. I want to shake her, and tell her to grow a pair, figure out which dude is worth the trouble and then fight for him. She'll fight for her friends, she'll fight for a client. But she doesn't seem capable of making a decision and then fighting for her man.

Towards the end, I thought we'd finally seen progress in this area, and it was sad to know one of the guys was going to lose but the other would win, and that in and of itself was satisfying. Then we get a cliff hanger that puts us right back in a situation where she's not going to have any control over what happens. This is partly her fault because (once again) she refuses to make a decision as to what court she is going to join in Faerie, thereby allowing the nasty ole Winter Queen to mess with her life.

So is the book a good read and should you read it? Absolutely. It is another great addition to a really well written series which is moving along nicely. More information is being divulged, and the character is growing in all areas other than her emotional ability to make a decision involving her love life. Here is hoping the next book has Alex Craft grow in this area as well. Because the series deserves it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Liked It but.... July 27, 2012
By Tiki

I feel I should review this as 2 books...the first half would be a 3; the last half a 4.25
I really like this series, but this book didn't grab my attention until almost half way in. I found myself skimming through parts that we're either recapping from previous books, or got very complicated and detailed. Granted, Alex's abilities are a bit complex, but the mystery/case that's introduced in the beginning just didn't hold my interest very well.

Although we see a lot of Rhianna, Roy, Tamara and a few other friends in the beginning, as Alex opens her own PI firm, we see very little of Falin or Death. And I'll admit, I like a good bit of romance in my UF series.

It wasn't until about the half way mark that this got rolling for me. The case they're working to solve becomes more interesting. Alex and Falin's interaction is interesting (I officially hate the Winter Queen) and Death finally makes an appearance. Still have the love triangle, but I'm sort of on the fence about it. I think I may be in the minority, and though I do like them both, I'd like to see things work out with Falin. Maybe because there's been more relationship interaction with them. With Death, we definitely do see some progress, and lord knows he's hot, and sweet, and funny, but I just don't see how Death can ever be a real relationship because of what he is (he can't even have a real name!) .... and he can never go to Faerie. Not a good thing as we see Alex becoming a full fledged fae!

So I'm holding out hope things can work out with Falin. He's like that tortured hero that steals your heart- was literally born to be the Queen's knight, taken from his parents as a baby and raised to be her bloodied hands, stripped of his free will from birth. Enter Alex, they fall for each other, and he becomes a different type of weapon for the Queen, a weapon of the emotional kind to try and force Alex's will. For her protection, he tries to keep the emotional wall up, while still trying to find any small loophole in the Queen's edict to interact with her, confesses his love, but warns her, she must not to trust him because of the Queen's control. I find it heartbreaking - especially as she leaves him in Faerie during the revelry.

But I keep remembering in book 2, he really fought for her and when they were escaping through Faerie, he told her his story; they talked of the Queen, of his being bound to her will & her word.....AND he told Alex he would not be bound forever. The curse will pass to the next bloodied hands when his service to her is complete.

Because I like Falin and the time she spends in Faerie, (I mean, she has a freakin' castle she hasn't even been inside of yet!), I'm hoping things will ramp up even more as her fae blood becomes more dominate...really want to know more about her Parents....their history and the childhood she can't remember. But more than anything, I'd like to see her kick that Winter Queen's ass, and have a HEA with Falin. So there.
