October 1995 G K Hall Large Print Book Series

From Publishers Weekly

Inspector Bill Slider, last seen in Death to Go, confirms his place among those intelligent fictional British coppers whose presence guarantees a satisfying read. After Sir Stefan Radek, conductor of the Royal London Philharmonic, is fatally shot during a rehearsal, Slider suspects this case will be a "domestic," resolved by looking into the widowed maestro's personal life. Within the music community, Radek was considered arrogant, vindictive and a mediocre conductor. The only one who seems truly bereaved is the victim's personal servant, Arthur "Buster" Keaton. Slider, recently abandoned by both his wife and his lover Joanna, a Philharmonic violinist, probes the affairs of Radek's daughter, Fay Coleraine, and is sufficiently charmed to root for her innocence. Fay's husband, however, a solicitor who is (at most) no more honest than he needs to be, and their son, who is, according to Keaton, "turning out wild," make credible suspects. After nabbing the shooter, Slider senses that something about catching the right man is itself wrong, as wrong as his estrangement from Joanna. To the remaining question-Can the fallible man put things, personal and professional, right?-Harrod-Eagles offers an intricate, credible reply.

From Library Journal

If your mystery readers have yet to meet British Inspector Bill Slider and Company, it's time they do. Though readers may guess the murderer early on in this fourth in the series, his police cohorts, and his violinist love, Joanna, are among the most appealing cast in recent memory. Their relationships, the music world setting, and the clever dialog (with blessedly fewer puns than in previous works) recommend this to all collections. Start with the first in the series, Orchestrated Death (LJ 1/92).

3.0 out of 5 stars The Death of a Famous Conductor -- Bill Slider's Fourth Case, February 12, 2012
Once again the Orchestra where Joanna, Bill Slider's significant other, plays the violin, is involved with a murder. The Orchestra had hired Sir Stefan Radek, a very famous conductor. One day at a rehearsal for a charity concert Sir Stefan is killed by a gunshot. Bill Slider is called in to investigate. His look into the victim's past reveals that Sir Stefan while in some respects a genius was in other respects a very unpleasant man who had made several enemies, both inside and outside of his family.

Slider's personal life is also in trouble as he balances his love life with his marital obligations.

The audio version is read by Terry Wale, who does his usual excellent job. This book is preceded by Death to Go, originally titled Necrochip and followed by Blood Lines.

The US title for this book was Grave Music.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Love Bill Slider!, December 30, 2002
Quick, those of you who like English Procedural mysteries. You will not be sorry if you take up this series. I love Bill Slider. He is really appealing and a good detective too. In this book Slider is trying to adjust to life without his wife and two children, and also without his lady love Joanna. He isn't handling single life that well, but a murder occurs that takes his mind off his personal problems. The victim in this story was very unlikeable, but it happens that he is the conductor for Joanna's orchestra, so at least Bill gets to see her in connection with the case. Before the murderer is discovered, Bill Slider finds a whole closet full of secrets in the victim's closet. Ms Harrod-Eagles keeps you guessing until the end with this one. Another good installment in the series.
