Book Description

October 12, 2004 Gravitation Ex (Book 8)
Track 32 Overview: Everything seems fine and dandy between Shuichi and Eiri-they just had their date, complete with print-club stickers, and after Eiri revealed his dark past, they seem to have achieved a new step in their relationship. Seguchi calls in Shuichi and Hiro to his office, and forgives them for blowing up the office. However, he forbids Shuichi from ever seeing Eiri again, adding that Eiri belongs to him. Shuichi is naturally distraught, but Hiro has a solution-he should stay with Eiri, and the both of them will quit N-G Productions. Major Event: Seguchi orders Shuichi to break up with Eiri. Track 33 Overview: Shuichi is understandably confused by Seguchi's orders to break up with Eiri, and Eiri doesn't help matters when he tells Shuichi that Seguchi is special to him. Hiro, Suguru and K try to convince Shuichi that he should stay with Eiri and break off from N-G for a different label. K accosts Shuichi on a mission to find Eiri and talks to him man to man to settle the whole matter. They find him drinking at a bar with Seguchi. Shuichi confronts Seguchi and tells him that he wants to stay with Eiri even at the cost of leaving N-G, but then Eiri seems to side with Seguchi after all. Major Event: Shuichi is convinced that he wants to stay with Eiri even if it means leaving N-G behind, but Eiri seems to decide to stick with Seguchi. Track 34 Overview: Shuichi dyes his hair in an attempt to right himself after being dumped by Eiri. K then forces him to accompany his surveillance of Hiro and Ayaka's date. The date happens to be at the premiere for the new movie starring Hollywood's biggest actress, Judy Winchester. The movie brings back memories of Eiri for Shuichi, and he throws a tantrum in the theater. Judy bursts on the scene, and it turns out that she is K's wife. She drags Shuichi away, claiming that she will help him debut in the U.S. Meanwhile, Eiri is convalescing at his family's home, where he ominously says that Seguchi will protect him, and kill "him" for Shuichi's sake. Major Event: Shuichi throws a fit in a movie theater when Hollywood actress Judy Winchester, who happens to be K's wife, bursts in, and accosts him. Track 35 Overview: Judy kidnaps Shuichi, intending to take him to New York and making him a star in America, but Shuichi refuses. Meanwhile, Sakano is fed up with Seguchi running the company merely by his personal whims. Eiri reveals that he broke up with Shuichi because Seguchi threatened to kill Shuichi otherwise. Shuichi is tranquilized and dragged aboard a plane headed for New York. K tries to rescue him, but to no avail. In New York, Reiji of XMR Records awaits Shuichi's arrival...Major Event: Shuichi is forced onto a plane headed for New York, where Reiji of XMR Records awaits him.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love it!, January 1, 2005
By
M. Cookson (Colorado Springs) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Gravitation, Vol. 8 (Paperback)
This is actually the first Gravitation book I've read, but I've seen all the anime. First off, the anime and the manga are not really the same thing - the premise is the same, but the plots have several differences (none of the events in this book are in the anime) and even the personalities of some of the characters don't always seem to match up (is it just me, or does Eiri seem sweeter in the manga? <g>). In this book, everything seems right in Shuichi's world - his record hits Platinum and his relationship with Eiri is actually going pretty well. Unfortunately, Shuichi's boss, Tohma Seguchi, ruins it all by telling Shuichi to choose between Eiri or his band. Shuichi becomes convinced that Eiri is in love with Tohma. In this book, Shuichi is also, er, brought to America.

I enjoyed Shuichi, even though he seems a little more flighty in the manga than he was in the anime, but I have to say that I'm a big Eiri fan. There are a few absolutely adorable Eiri scenes in this book, my favorites being the ones with the print club stickers - if Eiri could just bring himself tell Shuichi what he's thinking when he looks at the sticker, their relationsip would be a lot less rocky. Then again, Shuichi would also be annoyingly mushy all the time. Anyway, I not only love the story, I love the artwork as well. There are both gorgeous guys and pretty girls, something for everyone! :) I highly recommend this volume, although it would probably be a good idea either to have read earlier volumes or seen the anime, so that you know about Eiri's past and how his relationship with Shuichi usually functions. Also, a quick note, if gay relationships disgust you, this is probably not the manga for you. I've heard others say that even people who don't approve of such relationships would find themselves liking this series, but, after reading some reviews of other manga series with same sex relationships, I'm not so sure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Though I give the translation a 3., November 9, 2005
This review is from: Gravitation, Vol. 8 (Paperback)
Murakami-sensei's art has improoved munches since she started. The translations are funny, but the American references suck! They ruin the humor completely. A great deal of manga readers will already know about the original Japanese references & those who don;t need to get with it. You can't get by on manga without taking in tons of cultural tidbits in a lengthy period of time. Also, this volume's sidestory is Remix Gravitation 8.5, the most confusing of the series (why did K have short hair?)

3.0 out of 5 stars It's Gravitation, July 18, 2005
This review is from: Gravitation, Vol. 8 (Paperback)
Art is one thing that throws me off a Manga. And the art is horrible. Though alot more graphic then the Anime (which is upsetting), I think the Anime wins hands down. The Manga is lacking in a few things and it's confusing but still worth it for a Fan of Yaoi.
