Book Description

June 30, 2009
Gravity Dancers is the 4th volume of DC area women's fiction edited by Peabody in the past 5 years. The 22nd publication by Paycock Press (begun in 1976 and named for Irish playwright Sean O Casey's play Juno and the Paycock) adds 44 more women into the mix for a grand total of 161 women scattered throughout 4 thick volumes totaling over 1,600 pages. Are there really that many women writing fiction in the DC area? Apparently so. What are they writing about? You name it. Sex, death, love, hate, birth, murder, children, parents, revenge, the endless war, and somehow laughter among the grim choices in an even grimmer world. Original Fiction (only 3-4 reprints) by: Summer Blais, Elizabeth Bruce, Maud Casey, Laura Costas, Katharine Davis, Shayla Davis, Therese Droste, Julie Eill, Nan Fry, Virginia Hartman, Ellen Herbert, Helen Hooper, K. M. Huber, Elizabeth Huergo, Kyi May Kaung, Rachel Korr, Dylan Landis, Raima M. Larter, Cynthia Lollar, Alyce Lomax, Jennifer Makowsky, Sharon Morgenthaler, Molly Woods Murchie, Julee Newberger, Donna Oetzal, Denise Orenstein, Lisa Page, Maria Padhila, Meredith Pond, Julie Reilly, Elisavietta Ritchie, Carly Sachs, Laura E. Scott, Terri G. Scullen, Deena Shehata, Lynn Stearns, Lisa M. Tillman, Judith Turner-Yamamoto, Michelle von Euw, Paula Whyman, Joyce Winslow, Susi Wyss, Rebekah Yeager, and Laura Zam. 4.0 out of 5 stars Shayla Davis. Pg 37. Deoxy Martyribose Nucleac Acid!, July 20, 2009
This review is from: Gravity Dancers: Even More Fiction by Washington Area Women (Paperback)
I went to Poetry & Prose in Washington, DC yesterday to support the launch of this newly published book, and an aspiring young writer.

Ms. Shayla Davis is an aspiring young Black writer embued with literary passion. I am of the opinion that she is light years ahead of her peers of this generation,(as she is only 26) and even if I am not a literary Master.

Her family, drove some distance to support her. We live in an age where I heard last year at a University of Maryland graduation ceremony, "only 16% of African Americans are getting there degrees and 11% of Hispanics.

With those overheard facts, I know her Mom and extended family is proud of her. I beieve she may be the youngest published writer in this series. This is one in a series of four volumes which is comprised of 161 Fiction writers from the Washington DC area, published by Richard Peabody, Jr. Indeed, " a lush collection that covers the literary waterfront."

"...to riff on a local dance company's PR motto-Gravity Dancers are known for their power, passion, and fearlessness when it comes time to break new ground and fly. Enjoy the ride." Richard Peabody, May 2009.

Ms. Davis should be supported and afforded the opportunity to grow her talent with the support of respected published writers. I whole heartedly say, support her, mentor her, help her "break new ground and fly."
