Hair-raising camera work distinguishes this documentary on the skateboarding events of the 1999 Gravity Games, a gnarly competition held in Providence, Rhode Island. In the "Skateboard Vert" competition, skateboarders compete on large wooden U-shaped ramps. Shrieking down one side of the ramps provides the speed to sail up the other side, where airborne tricks are done at the top. Slo-mo camera work emphasizes the beauty and danger of the airborne maneuvers. The really wild stuff, however, takes place right out on the streets of Providence, during downhill skateboard races. The competition was videotaped by NBC Sports, and the very professional production work features cameras that follow skateboarders as they careen around corners and down steep hills. Some skateboarders are seen rocketing off the track and into hay bales set up to catch them, but amazingly, most of the racers manage to keep their balance and speed to the finish. As you might imagine, the skateboarders, some of whom are the subject of brief profiles, are an eccentric lot (think sun-bleached dreadlocks and surfer-speak). They take skateboarding to a level most people would never imagine, and while it may be an esoteric sport, this video makes it accessible and entertaining.
