fascinating retro-driven pop, August 17, 2000

on this record the verve sound an awful lot like a looser, funkier version of barret-era pink floyd. each of the songs is a little gem save for 'endless life' goes precisely nowhere. the shorter version of the title track on the group's eponymous EP is probably more satisfying, but the other numbers are exciting ('man called sun' is a vast improvement over the studio version).
