Biography

Biography by Heather Phares

In the tradition of British and Irish boy bands like Take That and Boyzone comes Dublin's Westlife. The group's first single, 1999's "Flying Without Wings," entered the U.K. charts at number one, a feat they replicated with "Seasons in the Sun" and "Swear It Again" in 2000. Their self-titled debut album met with ... Read more in Amazon's Westlife Store

Editorial Reviews

2010 release, the 11th studio album from Irish pop outfit Westlife. Working alongside producer John Shanks (Take That, Backestreet Boys, Bon Jovi) the band has evolved their contemporary pop sound whilst retaining their renowned, emotive ballad style. The album title came from a fans suggestion of a lyric from first single 'Safe' through Twitter and was subsequently adopted by the band.

I've been a fan of Westlife from the beginning. This is their 11th cd, and they just keep getting better. While I've not had a chance to listen to the whole cd yet, I've heard previews of all the songs, and I've heard the 1st single, "Safe". I ordered three copies ( 2 are gifts) before I heard a note, and now that I heard parts of all the songs, I'm not sorry and I know my friends won't be either.

BTW, I ordered from Amazon in the U.K., the price, even with shipping and currency exchange was still less that the import copy being sold on Amazon.com. And, now they are out of stock, while my order has been shipped and is due to arrive any day. I saved about $10-12 on my total order.

"Gravity" by Westlife is very good cd by a pop group that sings harmoniously well together. Many of the songs on this cd are uplifting. They are very good to listen to when in as musical tracks to provide creative inspiration and/or relaxing at home. My favorite musical track on this cd is "Beautiful Tonight". "Beautiful Tonight" is about a person who is beautiful on both the inside and out. In addition, "Beautiful Tonight" seems to be about being in love with someone of enormous potential. "Gravity" by Westlife is best for anyone that enjoys happy pop music.

LOVE West life even tho' I'm in my 50's!Beautiful love songs, vocals are great. Shane and Mark are spectular and Kian and Nicky are great as "secondary, background" voices, but West life wouldn't be the group without all 4 young men. Great job guys!

I love Westlife and own everything including unreleased tracks throughout their 13 yrs. This cd is good , with a few standout tracks that will never get the recognition they deserve because Simon Cowell is a pig. why bother putting so much money into the recording of an album and not promote singles from it. The main reason is because the first single barely cracked #10 in the UK and the album fell off the charts . but the only way to keep an album selling is promotion of tracks to radio . oh well . they are the longest running (Boyband) in history without ever splitting up. they've had more #1's and/ or top 10 singles than any boyband. I believe the main reason for the failure of this album besides Simon was they didnt do anything different. it's time to get into the present. danc music and R&B are the hottest things . they claim there is a dance song on the album...maybe at a over 50 club...stand out tracks are Diffence in me , closer and beautiful tonight. I recommend buying their greatest hits and Back home .

I am a huge Westlife Fan - in spite of never having seen them live or even on tv or dvd (I live in the USA). I own 11 full CDs & 6 CD Singles of this quartet. I love Pop Music and my overarching requirement for a good song is A BEAUTIFUL MELODY THAT WILL LINGER IN MY HEAD. I like ballads and fast dance melodies in equal measures.

Some of my favorite Westlife songs are: Tonight, Drive, To Be Loved By You, The Rose, Us Against The World, Love Can Build A Bridge, How to Break A Heart & especially the 2nd track on the 2010 "Safe" CD Single only: "Please Stay". It's a pity this incredibly song is not part of their most recent "Gravity" album.

While "Gravity" does in my view not have one track that merits a 9.5 rating like "How To Break A Heart" (9.5) - from 2009's "Where We Are" cd, I still give this 2010 album ("Gravity") a slightly higher average score than I did for the 2009 album.

Before concluding with my individual track scoring, I want to emphasize that Westlife is worth all the records they have set and are still setting (see their Wikipedia biography for details of their achievements). I never "pre-listen" a Westlife CD before buying anymore: I know it will be worth every $ paid for the CD.

Here follows my scoring of the tracks on Gravity:

1. Beautiful Tonight - 9.0
2. Safe - 8.5
3. Chances - 8.0
4. I Will Reach You - 8.0
5. Closer - 8.0
6. The Reason - 7.0
7. Tell Me It's Love - 7.0
8. I Get Weak - 7.5
9. Before It's Too Late - 8.0
10. No One's Gonna Sleep Tonight - 9.0 (My Favorite Track)
11. Difference In Me - 8.0
12. Too Hard To Say Goodbye - 9.0

Composite score for album: 8.1 (Any score over 8.0 indicates a completely worthwhile album in my book.)

P.S. The track "Please Stay" on the Safe CD Single only = a 9.5 song, and I urge every Westlife fan to buy this cd single immediately if you haven't yet.

Beautiful Tonight (10) - a perfect choice to be the 1st track. Immediate attention grabber. Lively and uplifting mix of electro pop with mind lingering back up vocals "Woa woo ohhh". A definite bright potential to be 2nd single of album. Is this really happened, it could have landed somewhere in the chart higher than "Safe"

Safe (10) - I was shocked and hyped at the same time when first listened to the quick 30 sec snippet of this song featured on X Factor. Very powerful ballad which was handled with near-perfection vocals of Shane and Mark. A well crafted classic Westlife style hit. Totally understandable to see it appears and disappeared right away on the chart. Folks are more hyped toward fast pacing songs nowadays.

Chances (8) - Once again, Shane's voice is performed at its max calmness and fulfilled feeling. Transition from Shane to Mark is always amazing and smooth. A very unique Westlife's style.

I Will Reach You (9) - Freshness is what I feel here. The song uplifts my mood every time and in every situations. Transition from Mark to Shane in this one is especially impressive here. Fit to be played in my car anytime with any of my friends whom riding along. Definitely a potential single if it was not because of selfish Simon.

Closer (8) - no comment

The Reason (9) - the moment I heard this cover of Hoobastank's, I immediately prefer it over the original. I can immediately feel the difference in the heavier/deeper bass in the beginning. Shane voice definitely surpassed anyone else. One of my favorite in the album. A potential killer hit if it was not a cover. Westlife always amazes me with their ability "take over and cover" style every time.
